Graham blinked back tears as he gathered his belongings. Or at least what was practical and what he could not bear to part with. Somehow in the months he had been here he had acquired more things than he’d had before in his life. Here, he had finally understood what he meant to have a home, but now he had to leave.
He had become complacent, staying far too long in one place. But today he had almost run into one of her men, and it was only by pure chance that he had escaped detection. It had been reckless staying so long, but how could he have left? Emma was here and Emma was .. everything. Love was something he had never expected to find, even before The Queen, but she had burst into his life like a force of nature, and now he didn't know how he was going to live without her.
He had to hurry, he didn't have much time before she would be back, and he needed to leave before then. Maybe he was coward for not telling her, for just leaving a letter, but he couldn't tell her the truth. He couldn’t face her and see her feelings for him die once she knew who he really was. Or worse, that they wouldn’t, that she would insist on running with him, he couldn't condemn her to this life with him. Better he just left and maybe someday she would be able to forgive and remember him with fondness. He knew he would hold her memory close to him for the rest of his life.
He took one last look around the small cottage that had become his home before heading for the door.
