The first thing I thought when listening to this was screw Spotify ads. I should probably just invest in a premium account. Between Dell shoving promotions down my throat and Mazda asking me my opinion on tunnels, I can barely settle into the music. Luckily, however, Van Morrison hits all the notes of a captivating performance. My left foot hangs off the side of my twin bed, shaking to the beat and in turn shaking most of pillows to the ground, not that I’m complaining. More space for me to live out what Jessica Hopper refers to as a fantasized “REAL rock-critic scenario”, much of it limited in my bedroom to just swaying in front of my computer screen. Van Morrison’s voice is the drunken man on the side of the road; he is passionate and sweet on Beside You and descends into distraught mutterings on T.B. Sheets. His pain is incredibly palpable, and it resonates with so many of us who have had something so dearly loved taken from us. Nearly nine and a half minutes of Van Morrison, arguing with himself, making sense of death. This is the turning point in which the compilation feels like Morrison trying to find himself in failure. It is the feeling of being overwhelmed, swallowed in something uncontrollable. He gives in, and in return we get to hear the stages of grieving. Ultimately, though, the collection finishes on a sweet note that leaves a good taste in my mouth after the songs fade out.
