Weekly Tips: Week #2

Okay guys lets talk about Bushings. The main thing you need to remember about bushings is that what you need is more about what you want, by that i mean there aren't really any types of bushings that are better than the other. Now don't get me wrong! Some people think different companies are better than others ( But that isn't my place to say ) but, there are bushings that are better at different things. Okay before I get into what bushing are let me say this. Bushings are the cheapest part to replace and so don't worry if you don't like your first setup. Okay! Back to point. Bushings ( for you beginner Longboarders are the rubber like things that are on your trucks) ) the bushings can change the way your board rides dramatically and really are one of MY favorite parts on a board to play with. Bushings mainly come in three different shapes the Cone, Barrel, and Stepped (also known as pyramid althogh im not sure why) and are the main difference between bushings. [ The Cone ] is the bushing best made for good carving or turns, they provide a lot of freedom for your trucks which although allows freedom also compromises some of the stability or "Rebound". [ The Barrel ] is all around okay, not the best at turning, not the worst and it's the same with rebound. This type of bushing is good for people that don't really know what they want and/or for people that don't care and would like to just relax when they ride. This is also good for people that want to just use there board for transport although that is more up to personal preference. [ The Stepped ] This type of bushing has the least amount of room for turning and thus has the best stability. This is the most used bushings for races ( although advanced courses may have too many turns for them to be comfortable.) This I can say is a good enough summery of the different types of shapes that bushings can be. But there is much more than this to bushings, there is also the different types of hardness. Every company has its own type of toughness to softness scale or the T.O.T. for short that measures what there good for and I will tell you what there good for. Okay guys the softer the bushings the better they will be at turning so the harder it is the at staying stable. So lets just use The T.O.T. system of Khiros ( Since thats what I ride ) Okay The system that Khiros has is the most variated and goes like this. Extra soft, Soft, Mild soft, Medium, Mild hard, Hard and Extra hard. I personally ride Extra soft, for many reasons. As I mentioned earlier softer bushings allow for sharper turns and for us here in the Panhandle of Texas the best places to ride near most cities are parking garages, so I like to be able to turn. But there is a lot of factors that can effect your bearings. One variable is your weight, I am very light and so getting Extra soft is a little more affordable because they don't break down near as easy. Some people that are heavier like to get harder bushings and break them down, Thus making it more affordable to get the same ride. So although this article may help you in desciding what you want to buy the best way to decide what you need or what you are good at is to try them for yourself.
