just wanted to share the National Down Syndrome Society’s message for this year’s World Down Syndrome Day (21st March) 💛💙

Regarding the recent influencer couple thar terminated their pregnancy because of a T21 diagnosis, there is something bothering me about the whole thing. It's not that they had an abortion, that is there choice. Its the language they used. The father called it a glitch and it was a shitty diagnosis. Just a lot of ableist language and he said a lot of things that were not correct about T21. I really feel that they should have kept their reason private because now we have people on social media debating the value of disabled people's lives.

Not to mention those with Down Syndrome that are going to have to hear and read about this story and defend their worth against others.

I'm pro choice but them announcing this and their reasons and their language really rubbed me the wrong way. They have millions of followers. There are activists that are very concerned that this may have set back so much progress made regarding Down Syndrome and developmental disabilities in general.

This is ableism.

Abortion was their choice, if they cannot see themselves being able to provide quality care to a child with down syndrome, that’s fine, but wording it as a “glitch” and conveying that in such a way where people debate over the lives of disabled people, is ableism
