Rude Awakening (chapter three of “Let the Gentle Ocean Take You”)

With all the gentle rubs and kisses—and her beloved sea rocking her calmly to sleep—it didn’t take long before the Captain was laid back in her bed. Alice always insisted the most peaceful her wife ever looked was when she was asleep. Even when they exchanged gentle kisses in private, Tabatha always seemed to have a far-off rage inside of her. But when she slept, her face was soft. There was a faint sign of wrinkles where her brows usually furrowed, and her face was sun kissed and freckled. Alice thought she was the most beautiful woman she’d ever seen.
But, today, she couldn’t admire her personal treasure. When she finally got her wife to sleep, she covered her with a shawl she had gotten on some island a while back. It was soft and delicate, and she thought it almost laughable to see Tabatha covered in something so pink and pretty.
Regardless, she quietly left the cabin before rushing to her shared room with Alfred. When she got there, she gasped. Dodgy was asleep in the hammock. Alfred’s hammock. Untied and peaceful. Tabatha would kill him if she saw him.
“Alfred?!” Alice whisper-shouted, pulling him out of his reading. He gasped and put his book down before standing up to talk privately with her.
“Oh, Alice! You’re finally here! I was meaning to talk to you about earlier, when I stood up to the Captain and—“
“What are you doing?”
