prologue to an epic

one.

All her life, BlueSargent has been caught halfway between wishing she could attend Hogwarts and being glad she can’t. The allure of being magical, casting spells and making potions, is impressive; at the same time, she has seen the weird shit that happens at that castle first-hand from her front-row seat in Hogsmeade. There’s maybe a fifty percent chance she wouldn’t even make it out of Hogwarts alive.

Still, being surrounded by seers and psychics and witches all her life, she thinks it would be nice to experience their world instead of just amplifying it, at least maybe for one day.

And then Richard Gansey barrels into her life. Be careful what you wish for, and all that.

two.

Joseph Kavinsky is a danger zone unto himself, red-hot stoplights emblazoned in his smirk, every dark side of the Gryffindor House tangled in his limbs: reckless, impulsive, wild, the very epitome of thrillseeker, and yet he somehow hasn’t managed to die yet. Ronan finds this more incredible than he maybe should.

The thing about Kavinsky is he operates in secret – quiet alcoves, abandoned classrooms, the heart of the forest, the Quidditch Pitch late at night with all the stars spread out above. Ronan knows a thing or two about secrets, and he still hasn’t puzzled out Kavinsky’s.

Maybe that’s what makes him so dangerous: you find yourself leaning closer trying to solve a riddle, and one day, he’s just going to explode.

three.

Seven years on and all he has to show for it is a shiny gold badge on his shirt – but Adam doesn’t really think he has any room to complain. Without those seven years away from home, he might never be free of the dangers of his old house, his old family, his old life. It’s worth it, even if the badge symbolizes only limited authority and the responsibility of trawling the corridors of Hogwarts at obscene hours of the night.

Less worth it, maybe, when he finds Ronan coming in through a hallway that he knows leads out to the Quidditch Pitch – leads out to Kavinsky and his gang and their nighttime flights and races.

Ronan doesn’t say anything, but Adam didn’t expect him to, anyway.

four.

Richard Gansey finds himself too easily charmed by too many things – a perk of his life that he chalks up to being a wizard, going to a magic school, learning to brew potions and turns quills into mice. He’s enamored by the castle, by the magic, by his teachers, by his friends, by the big, gaping world of wonder and mystery beyond the castle walls, and he doesn’t think the feeling will ever stop.

He’s often heard things about how the world is only bright to children; how the shadows elongate over the days; how it hurts to love so much. At seventeen, he’s almost starting to believe it – his friendships have holes in them, Ronan is dancing with the devil, Adam is lost in his struggles, and Noah is fucking dead.

And then he meets Blue Sargent one windy weekend in Hogsmeade, and he thinks maybe it’s the universe telling him it’s okay to keep believing in happiness.

she really is, it's ridiculous.  I mean, I would say that maybe there's something on my pants since Rosie and I were just at the dog park, but Rocket does the pants licking thing a lot.

(whispers because people treat eating disorders as 'only' a mental health issue not a 'real' disease- mental health is taboo and scary and might kill you if you talk about it!!!!)

Ah, but autism was at $44.  Which is arguably neurological, but still.  Other mental health disorders (which I cannot remember) were listed between Alzheimer's and EDs, and EDs were just dismally low considering it's one of the (if not just the) most fatal mental illnesses.

Basically society sucks.  I have to wonder if the fact that it's primarily considered a women's disorder has anything to do with the funding.

ikr. It's 8 hours, once a month, for three months.  I'd rather that than it be a shorter class I had to go to EVERY Saturday, but still. Blah.  But it's child counseling and it's great and we get an hour lunch break and...I've enjoyed it more than any other class this term.  I wish THIS was one of my four hour weekly classes instead of research or career counseling.

Then again, an eight hour not very often research or career counseling might kill me.
