I don't speak for everyone. Now I've read positive write ups concerning Mako but I hear more negative about it all. And just watching it I was rubbed the wrong way. The movie is called Pacific Rim. ONE asian character and she's not really the lead (that can be argued but I personally didn't feel that way). While Mako and Captain Belt Buckle never hook up there is still that implied tension. The look through the keyhole, the sparring after he effortlessly beats up abunch of asian dudes (not to mention the chinese jaeger pilots that LITERALLY all look alike). Just took me as more Great white male/asian lady fetishism. She doesn't get to finish her job and is saved by Belt Buckle. Yes, she's intelligent but I felt her instability as a character further reinforced western stereotypes that an asian women needs defending/saving/protecting. I felt like this movie belonged in the 80's. I especially didn't care for the characters with chinese names being portrayed by non asians. While people might love a Ron Perlman cameo, his appearance might've been the most offensive. It was top of the heap appropriation. An asian name, asian clothes played by a white dude. There was NO reason that was needed. You mean you can cast asians as background characters but then all the sudden it's difficult to cast them as main/supporting characters? Ugh. I really can't stand the praise that movie gets. It's an example of how unwilling people are when it comes to challenging ideas regarding what we consider diversity.
