Tae kissed Yoongi the moment they were outside.
“Sorry,” he said, laughing at Yoongi’s surprised expression. “I couldn’t wait. You’re so cute with those kids.”
“That’s—that’s okay,” Yoongi said, straightening his shirt for no reason as Tae gave him some room. “Let’s go before you feel like doing that again or something.”
“Oh, come on, you like when I kiss you,” Tae said, swatting at Yoongi’s butt as he started to walk away.
“Don’t—don’t do that,” Yoongi frowned, covering himself quickly to keep Tae’s hands away.
“Sorry, sorry. Tonight we are two fine sirs attending a dinner as friends not boyfriends.”
“Does that bother you?”
“Free food and time with you? Nah. You?”
“Yeah, but, I mean, it’s not like it’s safe to walk into most places saying ‘this is my boyfriend’ in Seoul.”
“That’s true,” Tae said as the went down the sidewalk. “Which really sucks, to be honest.”
“It does,” Yoongi sighed, stuffing his hands in his pockets. “Anyway, subway?”
“Taking the subway to a fancy restaurant? I’m swooning,” Tae joked, putting his hand on his forehead and sighing a little.
“I aim to impress,” Yoongi deadpanned.
“Just keep walking in front of me, and you’ll do a fine job,” Tae said with a grin, watching as Yoongi stopped so he would walk in front of him instead. Laughing, Tae obliged, leading the way toward the nearest station.
“You know,” Tae whispered into Yoongi’s ear once they were on the crowded car standing too close to each other and everyone else, “if you want people to believe we’re just friends, you probably shouldn’t look at me that way.”
“I’m—I’m not! I’m looking at your necklace,” Yoongi said, pointing up at it from where it dangled against Tae’s collarbones in the space left open from his two undone buttons.
“Oh, you like it?” Tae said, not even looking down as he stared at Yoongi.
“It’s nice,” Yoongi said, clearing his throat. “You should stop looking at me, too, by the way.”
“I look at all my friends like this.”
“Sure,” Yoongi huffed, rocking a bit forward as the train jerked. “Does it mean anything?”
“What?”
“The necklace. Does it mean anything special?”
“Oh,” Tae blinked, finally tilting his head down and touching the gold necklace with the dark red stone in it. “Nope!” he smiled cheerfully up at Yoongi who deflated a little. “I just like it.”
“Yeah, okay,” Yoongi said, leaving his eyes on the necklace as it bounced with each small jolt of the car. He could see Tae’s smirk in his peripheral vision and see him looking down at him unlike any friend would, and by the time they arrived at their stop, Yoongi was pretty sure his face was beet red from more than just the heat of the subway. Tae didn’t seem fazed at all, as he laughed and skipped down the sidewalk with Yoongi trailing behind him.
“So, why this place again?” Tae said as they walked down a busy sidewalk.
“Well, I took pictures for them today,” Yoongi said from somewhere right behind his shoulder, “and in addition to paying me, they offered me a meal. Apparently once a week the chef does a limited menu to see what he wants to make the next week.”
“A limited menu?” Tae said, impressed even if he didn’t quite know what that meant. “He changes the menu every week?”
“Apparently,” Yoongi shrugged.
“I feel like we’re undressed for this then,” Tae laughed. “Do you take pictures for restaurants often?”
“No,” Yoongi said, bumping into Tae’s arm as someone passed by them closely. “Not really my thing. But my mom suggested me, so I thought it best.”
“Your mom?” Tae said, confused. “Does she support your photography?”
“Oh, no, not at all. I mean, she didn’t before college, and she certain didn’t support me dropping out. But she also can’t stand having an embarrassing son, so she tends to still talk about me with her friends as if I’m some award-winning artist.”
“You should be!” Tae said, nudging Yoongi with his shoulder who only rolled his eyes. “Well, thank her for me, I guess. Free food!”
“Oh, yeah, I’ll be sure to tell her I used the voucher to take my boyfriend to dinner,” Yoongi scoffed.
“Do you think she would hate me?” Tae said seriously, making Yoongi stop so quickly that someone bumped into him from behind and muttered under their breath at him.
“If she knew you were dating me, yes. Simply because you’re dating me. If she met you and you said you liked men, then yeah, she’d hate you. If she knew you were a photographer who dropped out of school, she would.”
“She’s a real hateful person, huh?” Tae said, reaching up to just barely touch the cuff of Yoongi’s sleeve as he stopped and stepped closer to him to prohibit the wave of people passing around them to sweep them up with it.
“She’s,” Yoongi started, frowning up at him, “she’s a real hurt person. She’s felt betrayed even since I stopped being what she expected. I’m a constant disappointment, and it’s made her very bitter.”
“But she shouldn’t—”
“Of course she shouldn’t. Didn’t you say something the other day about not being able to change certain people’s minds after a certain point, though? My mom’s just my mom. I disagree with her, and she disagrees with me, and we avoid each other as much as possible. She—Jimin is making me realize more than I already knew how even the meanest people are hiding something, some pain they don’t know how to deal with, you know?”
“You,” Tae said, lifting his hand up Yoongi’s arm.
“I’m hungry,” Yoongi said, smiling warily as he squeezed Tae’s wrist before pulling his arm away.
“I was going to say you’re amazing,” Tae huffed, hopping to keep up with Yoongi before he got too far away. He told himself not to look at the guy’s ass in his slacks, but his eyes wandered anyway, except they stopped when he noticed Yoongi’s fingers twitching, and he smiled as he took his place by Yooongi’s side again, nudging his shoulder to let him know he was there.
“Hurry up,” he said as he passed Yoongi, tugging on his chuff again, “I’m hungry.”
Yoongi immediately felt underdressed and out of place the moment he and Tae entered the restaurant. Even though he had been there just a few hours before, the place hadn’t been open then, and the dimmer lights and full tables and waiters and waitresses made it all seem smaller and more real, and even though he was the photographer, he felt like everything he did was going to be scrutinized and reported back to his mom. He shied away from Tae’s hand on his back as he held the door open for them, then, and walked stiffly up to the greeter, holding out the card he was given earlier.
“Good evening, I have a reservation for Min.”
“Min,” the lady smiled, looking down at her book. “Party of two! Please follow me.” Obeying her, Yoongi looked back to check on Tae who looked as lost and overwhelmed as Yoongi felt, but he smiled reassuringly at him. They were sat at a small table near a corner across from each other, and they each took their own seats, thanking the lady as she left them only to be replaced by a young waiter who turned over their wine glasses and started to ramble on as he poured from a bottle before placing it down once their glasses were full. As the menu was set, they really didn’t need to order, and soon the waiter was gone, leaving Tae blinking a little dumbfoundedly across the table at Yoongi.
“What was he saying about wine?”
“Oh, just that the chef suggested it to pair with the food,” Yoongi said, taking a small sip to taste his glass.
“Wine’s wine,” Tae huffed, picking up his glass to sniff at before putting it back down.
“Don’t let anyone here hear you say that,” Yoongi laughed.
“What does it matter? How does he know, out of all the wines, what would be best?”
“I mean, it’s his job, so I imagine he drank and ate a lot to figure it all out.”
“Sounds like an alright job,” Tae joked, aiming to reach for his water instead. “It’s a nice place,” he said as they both looked around, trying not to stare too long at any one thing or person for too long. Yoongi hummed, sipping his wine solemnly again.
“I know you can’t tell, but I’m very uncomfortable, so you’re going to need to help me not drink more than two glasses of this, okay?”
“Okay,” Tae said, sitting up and giving Yoongi all of his attention, ready to take his job as distractor very seriously. “So, taking pictures earlier went well?”
“Yeah,” Yoongi said, looking at him over his glass. “It was nice to be able to concentrate without worrying about the kids running around or breaking some glasses or something. Thank you again for watching them. Were they okay?”
“After Jimin’s little meltdown, yeah, of course. I—I actually wanted to talk to you about that, but I don’t know when to do it. I don’t want to ruin dinner or anything.”
“Oh, well, you can’t say that and not tell me,” Yoongi said, clearing his throat and putting his glass down. “Otherwise I’ll be even more of a nervous wreck. What happened?”
“Well,” Tae said, taking a deep breath, “Jimin was about to hit Jungkook, so I picked him up, and that seemed to freak Jimin out even more. He started kicking me, so after we all settled down, I told him he needed to be put in timeout, and he freaked out even more.”
“I don’t think I’ve put him in timeout before,” Yoongi mumbled. “Did he actually do it?”
“No,” Tae said slowly. “He got really scared. Something about the idea of the corner or being quiet made him—he was shaking, so I didn’t make him do it. I know I should have followed through or come up with another idea, but he was so scared—”
“That’s okay,” Yoongi said, sighing a little. “That’s fine. I mean, it’s not okay that happened. I don’t know why he would react like that, but I suppose that’s another thing to ask a therapist about.”
“Since you’ve never put him in time out, you think his dad—” Tae trailed off, watching Yoongi look across the table at him with a frown.
“It’s likely. I mean, probably. It’s either that or something from his old daycare, but considering what he’s done and said before, I have to think the worst.”
“I’m sorry,” Tae mumbled, but Yoongi shook his head and kicked his foot under the table.
“Don’t be. I appreciate you telling me. And I’m grateful you handled that so well. Sorry I left that to you.”
“No, not a problem. Kids are,” Tae said, thinking for a second, “little humans, right? Which means they’re fragile and pretty complicated but easy to figure out the more you interact with them. Are you trying another therapist this week?”
“Yeah, Wednesday,” Yoongi said, looking up as their waiter came over with their first course.
“Hopefully it goes better than the last one,” Tae said as they thanked the man before he left. Once he had, they both looked down at their plate and then up at each other before laughing lightly, each shrugging and picking up a fork.
“The thing is,” Yoongi said as they ate, “that I’m sitting here thinking about how many people know my mom, and part of me just wants to say fuck it and go wild so it’ll come back to her, but another part of me keeps thinking one day I’ll make her proud or something, so I’d best behave like a good little boy, you know? It’s a little pathetic.”
“No, not at all,” Tae said, kicking him a little under the table so he would look up at him. “I think all kids, even when we grow up, feel that to a certain extent. I know I do, that’s for sure. But I’d say go for the fuck it option. Just be yourself. Unbutton your cuffs, roll up your sleeves.”
“No, that’s okay. I do have some decorum,” Yoongi said, chuckling as he took another bite.
“You can have decorum and have tattoos, hyung,” Tae said. “It’s not a big deal.”
“I know.”
“So roll them up.”
“No, Tae.”
“Oh, come on. I’ll unbutton another button,” Tae said, putting his fork down and reaching for his shirt.
“Tae,” Yoongi snapped, “stop. Please,” he said, his voice softening as he went back to his plate.
“Yeah. Sorry,” Tae mumbled, picking up his fork to do the same. They stayed quiet as they finished their first plate, and soon the waiter whisked them away, replacing them with another, and before they had barely started them a well-dressed lady came briskly up, bowing a little at the table. Yoongi scrambled to stand up, his chair scrapping a little as he did so, and Tae followed suit, watching as Yoongi bowed slightly to the lady who helped up a hand and smiled brightly.
“Please, Mr. Min, sit. I just came to check that you’re enjoying your meal.”
“Of course,” Yoongi said, sitting back down. “Everything’s delicious.”
“I’m glad to hear,” she said, bowing a little to Tae.
“This is Kim Taehyung,” Yoongi said.
“Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Kim. I’m Ms. Nam, owner of this small establishment. I hope everything’s to your satisfaction.”
“More than,” Tae beamed as he sat back down.
“I’ll leave you to it, then,” Ms. Nam smiled, placing a hand on Yoongi’s hand quickly. “Be sure to say hello to your mother for me.”
“I will. Thank you again, Ms. Nam,” Yoongi nodded, smiling briefly until she walked away. They both watched her walk away before looking at each other, and Tae promptly burst out laughing, his hand flying to his mouth to keep quiet. “Wh-what, what, what?”
“I was holding my knife when I stood up,” Tae gasped, wiping at his eyes. “Probably looked like a crazy person. Think she’ll tell your mom?”
“God, I hope so,” Yoongi grinned, letting out a sigh of relief that that was all it was.
“I’m sorry for pushing the tattoo thing,” Tae said once he had calmed down and put his knife down, too.
“You can see them later all you want.”
“Really, hyung?” Tae beamed, grinning at how Yoongi blushed and ducked his head when he realized what he had said and laughing when he stuffed another piece of meat in his mouth to have an excuse not to answer. Having mercy, Tae changed the subject, eager to talk about other embarrassing moments in their lives, and they spent the majority of the rest of the meal swapping such stories.
Tae told Yoongi about the time he followed what he thought was a stray cat home only to find an old lady sitting in a lawn chair who promptly threatened to call the police if he didn’t leave immediately. Yoongi told him about accidentally buying a pair of earrings for a girl he was trying to impress only to realize when he gave them to her that they had caught his eye in the first place and gave him the idea that she would like them because she already owned the exact pair. Tae talked of summers at the strawberry farm and Yoongi told him about summers spent inside out of the sun, of both of their favorite presents being their first camera tied with getting a dog, and how worst presents included Tupperware, watches, and gifts they sworn they had given to their brother or sister the year before.
By the time Yoongi was on his second glass of wine and they were preparing for dessert, they had both seemed to grown more comfortable, their voices no longer mere whispers and their laughs a bit louder. It was probably this that attracted someone’s attention across the room, but it was visual confirmation that made her approach their table.
Yoongi noticed her first, though he didn’t recognize her, and he tapped Tae’s leg under the table to get his attention.
“What?” Tae said, his mouth half full, and at the cock of Yoongi’s head, he looked over and about jumped out of his seat, his feet kicking Yoongi, making the smaller man wince and lean forward in his chair a little. “Dr. Ahn!”
“Kim Taehyung, I thought that was you,” the lady said, smiling politely as Tae stood up to bow almost completely over. “How are you?”
“I’m doing well! How are you? Oh, please, this is Min Yoongi,” Tae said, gesturing toward Yoongi as he stood up and bowed slightly to the lady who smiled and nodded her head at him. Her hair was a vibrant red, her jumpsuit a bright yellow. She stuck out like a single flower in a field of weeds, like the sun on a cloudless day, and from her smile alone Yoongi could tell she wasn’t someone to mess with.
“Hello,” he mumbled, hating himself for it.
“Nice to meet you.”
“He’s a photographer, too!” Tae chirped up, causing the lady to raise an eyebrow.
“Oh? Like our Tae here? What subject do you prefer?”
“Uh, more architecture myself. Buildings and landscapes and the like. I photographed the restaurant earlier today, actually.”
“Oh? I’ll have to look out for those,” the lady said, thought there was something in her voice that Yoongi didn’t quite believe.
“Yoongi, this is Dr. Ahn, one of my professors. Or, she used to be,” Tae smiled sheepishly.
“Are you still taking photos, Tae?”
“Oh, of course! Nothing can stop me from doing what I love,” Tae smiled.
“Not even your forgetfulness, huh?” the lady said, and while Yoongi flickered his eyes in concern over to Tae, the guy didn’t even blink, and his smile didn’t even waver.
“Oh, come on, professor, how many times do we have to have that talk? I thought everyone loved a spacey artist.”
“Everyone loves an artist who can meet a deadline and follow instruction.”
“Nah, that’s what makes a good student. Everyone was always telling me art has rules that are meant to be broken. You can’t have the best of both worlds.”
“That’s what you kept telling us,” Dr. Ahn said, smiling still. “Should be expecting to see you back next semester?”
“Can I expect you to drop that ridiculous rule about attendance?”
“You already know the answer to that, Mr. Kim.”
“Then I guess not, sadly,” Tae shrugged, still smiling widely.
“Tae was one of my best students,” the doctor said, turning toward Yoongi. “But he simply kept missing class too many times.”
“And despite being one of her best students, my work was never good enough,” Tae said, also turning toward Yoongi. “Which never made much sense to me, if I’m honest. I get the need to be objective, and I can’t imagine how hard that is for a teacher, but isn’t art subjective, at least at some point? What was it that you were always telling me, Dr. Ahn, about what was wrong with my work? I keep forgetting,” Tae said, Yoongi hearing the bite through his smile.
“You never pushed yourself far enough, Tae. Your pieces were unoriginal and thus unimaginative.”
“That’s it,” Tae said, snapping his fingers as if he had remembered himself. “Which also never made sense to me, because, I don’t know, aren’t my eyes my own? Every time I look around the room, don’t I see things that only I can see? For instance, Dr. Ahn, what do you see there?” His finger was pointing at Yoongi, who shook his head slightly as his eyes widened.
“I see a young man who definitely isn’t related to you and is perhaps a bit annoyed or embarrassed you’re using him as an example.”
“Ah, you’re probably right. But I also see an uncle to two beautiful kids that he’s raising extremely well. I see a tiredness to his eyes that can only be explained as concern. I see beauty and I see pain. And, you see, Dr. Ahn, that’s the thing about art. When I take a picture, I see something. When you look at it, you may see something else. If you paint something, you may see something or want me to see something, but I could see a completely different thing. Are either of us wrong? Certainly not. Is either of us better than the other because we saw something different? I don’t think so. But, of course, as teachers, that’s what you seemed to be teaching us. You know I could have showed up to class if I really wanted to, Dr. Ahn. You know it wasn’t my forgetting that was the problem. I get that each of you wanted to find the next Van Gogh or something, but not every class is going to have one of those. No class ever will, really, because, I mean, it’s Vincent Van Gogh for god’s sake,” Tae huffed.
“But, and I mean this with all respect, Dr. Ahn, perhaps instead of looking for the next best thing, you could have just stopped comparing me to someone else and just seen my art for what is was. Art.”
“Have you been waiting a long time to get that off your chest?” the lady said, seemingly unbothered in the slightest by Tae’s rant.
“Well, there’s nothing to lose now, is there?” Tae shrugged, taking a deep breath and standing up a little straighter.
“There’s always something to lose,” Dr. Ahn said, glancing at Yoongi before smiling back at Tae. “But you never seemed like the fearful type to me. At the university, I was your teacher first and foremost, so while I admired your courage speaking before us all, you know I couldn’t have changed my mind. The policies still stand.”
“Yeah, I get that, even if I disagree,” Tae said.
“Sometimes, when we know we can’t change something we don’t agree with, a law or someone else’s belief or society as a whole, we must learn to integrate as much as possible while still subverting authority in other, more subtle, ways. And what way has man always been the most successful in when it comes to getting his ideas across in the most seemingly harmless way?”
“Through art, of course,” Tae said, smiling again.
“Well, I’m glad I taught you something,” the lady laughed, reaching into her pocket for something. “If you’re free this week, come by my gallery some time.”
“Oh, do you have a show going on?”
“No, I’d like to hire you.”
“Wh-what?” Tae stuttered, looking up at her from the card she had handed him.
“You’re right. You’re never going to become the next Van Gogh, but even the most successful artists rarely went to or finished school. You need real world experience more than anything else. You need to explore and create and experiment. But, as an artist, I know that means you need supplies and a space more than anything else. Do you still do only manual shots?”
“Yeah, yes ma’am,” Tae corrected, nodding thoroughly.
“Good. My last photography intern recently moved, and I have a project I need help with. I do hope you come by sometime. You’d have to branch out of your comfort zone a bit, but I doubt that will be much of a challenge for you. You always were optimistic. Just try not to forget, yeah?”
“Yes ma’am,” Tae said as the lady laughed and waved a hand at him.
“None of that now. I am glad I ran into you again, Tae. I’ve missed your smiling face around campus. It was nice to meet you, too, Mr. Min. I wish you all the best in your photography. If Tae rejects me, perhaps you would like a job?”
“Thank you, Dr. Ahn, but something tells me we wouldn’t work well together.”
“Yes,” she said slowly, looking him over once more before smiling and winking at him. “Yes, you’re much too conventional for me. Goodbye, Mr. Kim.”
“Goodbye, Dr. Ahn,” Tae said, bowing again as the lady sauntered away, holding the card in both of his hands.
“She’s interesting,” Yoongi said slowly.
“Hyung,” Tae said back, “can we go home now? I—I think I—my brain is—”
“Yeah, of course. Not like we need to pay or anything,” Yoongi said, pushing his chair in. “Are you okay?”
“Huh? Yeah. I’m—this—she—I don’t—” Tae mumbled incoherently.
“Okay, let’s go, yeah?” Yoongi said, touching Tae’s elbow gently but firmly enough to move him forward. He figured it was late enough that he could always blame alcohol if Tae needed guiding or if he stumbled or swayed too much. In general, he was fine and followed closely behind Yoongi back to the subway station even though his eyes hardly left the card. He didn’t speak, though Yoongi could tell his mind was busy working, and he used the quiet to concentrate on getting them home safely, the streets darker and more crowded now as the night wore on. Once they were on the subway, he remembered to text Namjoon once he made sure Tae was secure in a corner holding onto a handle, letting him know that at least for now they were going back to Tae’s. Ignoring the winking emoji his friend sent, Yoongi rolled his eyes and focused on Tae again who had finally put the card away.
“Sure you’re okay?” he said again, watching as Tae grinned slightly before reaching for his free hand, wrapping his fingers around Yoongi’s wrist.
“More than. I just—I can’t believe she offered me a job. No one—do you know how hard it is to be her intern?”
“No,” Yoongi said plainly.
“So hard, hyung,” Tae said, squeezing his wrist a little harder when Yoongi raised an eyebrow. “I’m serious. I never—to ask me?”
“Well, do you want to?”
“Yeah. Totally. She scared the shit out of me as a teacher, but I always had this suspicion she liked my work, or me, more than she could say, you know? Maybe—I think working for her would be really different. It would be a good opportunity. Don’t you think?” Tae said, smiling at Yoongi. Yoongi smiled back, but before he could even respond, Tae whipped his hand away, rubbing it on his thigh and muttering to himself.
“Shit, sorry, of course I shouldn’t. It wouldn’t work.”
“Whoa, whoa, wait, Tae,” Yoongi said, reaching for his hand and pulling it away from his leg. “Slow down. I think it would be great. You should definitely go talk to her. I don’t—I don’t mean to be rude, but you don’t really have a steady income, right? So this would be good, wouldn’t it? And it sounds like she could teach you stuff and give you a space to work in. It’d be like going to school in a way but you’d get paid for it.”
“Are you serious?” Tae mumbled, twisting his fingers under Yoongi’s.
“Uh, yes. Why would I not be? I mean, if she’s actually a dick and meant hiring you only to be an unpaid intern or something, which, even then you could learn things without paying for them, or if she’s like the boss in The Devil Wears Prada, then don’t work for her. But otherwise, you should go if you want to.”
“You wouldn’t mind?”
“Why the fu—why would I mind, Tae?” Yoongi said, leaning forward and trying to see into Tae’s face.
“I—If I worked, I wouldn’t have as much time for you. I’d be less available.”
“I don’t expect you to be available twenty-four-seven, Tae. If your schedule changed, we’d adjust. My hours are extremely flexible, if you didn’t know.”
“But you wouldn’t, I don’t know, feel threatened or anything?”
“Threatened by what?”
“I don’t know, it’s stupid. Never mind,” Tae said, slinking against the glass window of the train.
“Uh, no, what is it?” Yoongi said, tugging on his fingers a bit.
“As a photographer, too, you wouldn’t, I don’t know, get jealous?”
“You really think I’m that kind of person?” Yoongi said seriously, trying not to sound hurt.
“I don’t know, hyung, I don’t know everything about you.”
“Oh, and here I was thinking you had me all figured out,” Yoongi huffed, though he only pressed into Tae’s space more by knocking their knees together as the train jolted. “I will, in no way, feel threatened if you go get a posh job at a hipster art gallery. Though, if you come home wearing a beret one day, I may kick you out.”
“Hyung,” Tae said, thankfully smiling down at him. “I already have a beret.”
“Ah, then, sadly, I must inform you we’re breaking up,” Yoongi teased, wiggling away from Tae’s fingers as he tried to tickle him.
“And did you seriously reference The Devil Wears Prada earlier?”
“I blame Namjoon,” Yoongi said in his defense. Tae laughed, and moved his fingers away from Yoongi so he could wrap his whole arm around his back, and for a few seconds, Yoongi just enjoyed the way Tae’s whole face looked relived and happy and comfortable, but when Tae’s eyes narrowed over Yoongi’s shoulder and his arm slipped away, Yoongi remembered where they were, and he ducked his head, hanging onto the railing overhead and stepping back away from Tae. They were both silent until they reached their stop, and they were both quiet on the walk back to the apartments, the atmosphere around them suffering from the constant change in moods throughout the night. When they stopped in front of Yoongi’s door, Namjoon’s snores audible from outside, they both grinned at each other under the porch light.
“Told him I’d be at yours at least for a bit,” Yoongi whispered.
“Oh, thank god, because I need to kiss you, like, a lot,” Tae breathed dramatically, grabbing his wrist and fumbling with his keys in his other hand as Yoongi laughed behind him.
They stumbled into Tae’s apartment as if they were both drunk, and Tae was true to his word, pulling in Yoongi around his waist immediately and kissing him without any preamble. Huffing against his lips a little, Yoongi tried to keep up, but Tae nipped at his bottom lip and pulled away before Yoongi could react.
“Wine is so gross. Let’s brush our teeth.”
“Wow. Way to kill the mood,” Yoongi deadpanned, watching Tae smile smugly and plant a kiss to his cheek before pulling him toward the bathroom.
“Hurry up,” Tae said, practically throwing him a toothbrush as he stuck his own in his mouth.
“Whose is this?” Yoongi said, eyeing it with slight disgust as Tae shrugged.
“Huuurah uuup,” Tae mumbled before spitting and rinsing his mouth out.
“What’s the rush?” Yoongi said, squeezing a small amount of tooth paste onto the brush running it languidly over his teeth.
“Been wanting to kiss you all day.” Raising his eyebrow in the mirror at Tae, Yoongi hummed as if to say “really?” or “why?” “Really. Fuck, when I woke up and your hair was all sticking up and you were stumbling around making coffee and breakfast for everyone. And when you got dressed in your slacks. I kind of want you to wear slacks every day now. And when I called you because Jimin was so upset, I wanted to just squeeze you and kiss you all over, and then when you came back and you ate ramen on my couch, you looked so good and comfortable I almost burst. And, fuck, when I picked you up tonight, this shirt, these pants,” Tae said, pulling at Yoongi’s belt loop hard enough for him to lose his balance a little and cling onto the counter as he glared back at Tae.
“Then, on the subway, when you kept looking at my necklace,” Tae grinned, sarcasm dripping off of the words, “I hated that we were in public. I hated that people kept me from kissing you. And on the street, when you talked about your mom, who, no offense, I kind of hate, and I don’t usually hate people, I wanted to hold you and make you forget all about her, and I wanted her to be there while I kissed you senseless to show her how beautiful you are. And at the restaurant,” Tae said, Yoongi spazzing a little as Tae’s hand moved up his back, “when I upset you, I wanted to apologize and pull your chair over and just sit you in my lap and kiss you while I said sorry, and then, when Dr. Ahn showed up and you looked like you wanted to fight her, I wanted to kiss you then, too. And don’t even get me started about the subway ride back. I almost lost it. I swear, are you done yet?”
“That,” Yoongi choked, his face bright red as he spat out the foam leaking out of his lips and sputtering a little as he rinsed his mouth. “That’s a lot of kissing.”
“I know! I know, you just,” Tae said, pulling on Yoongi’s belt loops again and spinning him around, catching him by the waist when he did. “Sorry. Sorry if that was a lot. My brain just gets all buzzy sometimes, and I just have to spill it out or keep it locked up, and that hurts. It hurts to keep it all in all the time, you know?”
“I know,” Yoongi said softly.
“You didn’t—I forgot to watch how much you drank, sorry. Are you drunk?”
“No, not at all.”
“Okay, okay, good,” Tae breathed, leaning forward and pressing his forehead against Yoongi’s. “That’s good.” The proximity but extreme lack of actual kissing confused Yoongi for a second, and he blinked to keep his and Tae’s hair out of his eyes before he slowly put his hands around Tae’s wrists. “Sorry, sorry,” Tae chuckled, lifting his head. “I got myself all excited. Too excited. I’ve been a little keyed-up all day. I’ll tone it down.”
“It’s—you don’t have to,” Yoongi frowned. “I’ll let you know if you do anything I don’t like, yeah?”
“I don’t know,” Tae said, cocking his head a little. “You actually seem to go really quiet when I actually start doing things. I don’t know if you would actually stop me.”
“I,” Yoongi said before clamping his mouth shut.
“Wow, you can’t even deny that!” Tae laughed, squeezing his hips enough for Yoongi to squirm away. “Okay, okay!” he said, stopping Yoongi before he got away. Once he had him in his grasp again, he used one of his hands to tilt Yoongi’s head up until he looked at him. “Okay. I will trust you to take care of yourself and tell me to stop if you want me to. But you also need to trust me when I say I want to take care of you, so if I’m not sure, I will also stop. Okay?”
“Okay,” Yoongi mumbled. He had a feeling his face was going to be in a constant state of warm and red for the rest of the evening, and the delicious food he had eaten was going to be dancing around for a while as he tried to find some way to steady his heartbeat and stabilize himself.
“Oh,” Tae said, his thumb coming up to tug slightly on the corner of Yoongi’s eyelid. “I forgot to mention the eyeliner. That deserves a kiss, too.”
“It was too much,” Yoongi mumbled.
“I think it looks good,” Tae hummed. “Your eyes are really pretty.”
“Okay, okay, are we going to kiss or what?”
“Hyung, let me admire you.”
“It’s just, you keep talking about kissing me, but you haven’t done it yet,” Yoongi huffed, pressing his lips together as Tae ran his thumb down his cheek until he was gripping his chin.
“You,” Tae said, keeping his chin still as he leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to Yoongi’s cheek. “Are,” he mumbled, running his lips up Yoongi’s jaw and leaving a kiss on his cheekbone. “Such,” he hummed as Yoongi closed his eyes, giving him access to his eyelashes that flickered as Tae barely kissed them. “A,” he said, kissing Yoongi’s forehead slowly. “Brat,” he chuckled, finally kissing Yoongi where he really wanted it.
“Now,” he said, pulling away after only one kiss and watching Yoongi’s eyes open slowly only to narrow at him. “I’d like to get more comfortable, so, if you would please follow me.”
“What’s with the formal manners?” Yoongi mumbled, only following Tae because he was tugging on his wrist.
“Ya, shut up and go fucking sit down,” Tae said, dropping his wrist when they got back into his main room. Yoongi blinked at him and opened his mouth, only to see Tae cock his head. “Which do you prefer?”
“Uh,” Yoongi said eloquently.
“Come on, you promised me you’d tell me to stop if you don’t like something.”
“Don’t fucking tell me to shut up,” Yoongi snapped at him, only to have Tae smile.
“Got it! Didn’t think you’d like that. I’m going to grab us some water, so make yourself comfortable.” Frowning at his back, Yoongi watched as Tae went to his kitchen and got out two glasses, filling them slowly with water from the tap. He fidgeted with his fingers and pushed at his cuticles as he waited, and by the time Tae turned around, he was still standing there.
“Okay, so, suggestions don’t really work, either,” Tae mumbled, walking past him and putting the cups down on the table by his bed.
“What?”
“Come over here, please,” Tae said, patting his bed before undoing his belt, looking down for a moment as he slipped it out of its loops before tossing it to the floor. Still frowning a little, Yoongi shuffled toward him and sat down on the bed near him. “Thank you,” Tae beamed, taking Yoongi’s face in his hand and giving him a quick kiss before standing back up. “I’m going to take my shirt off, so you can start on my pants,” he said, not waiting for an answer before he started to unbutton his shirt. Yoongi swallowed and blinked up at Tae, his fingers pulling at his own sleeve cuff.
“Just getting ready for bed,” Tae said as he did his last button, pulling his shirt off one sleeve at a time. “Just getting comfortable. I can put on different pants if you want me to. Help me, and then I’ll help you,” he said, reaching for Yoongi’s hand, but the second he touched his fingers, Yoongi jerked back. Lifting an eyebrow, Tae eyed Yoongi carefully, wondering if he had gone too far.
“Sorry, sorry,” Yoongi mumbled, putting his hands back in his lap and sitting up straight again. “I’m okay. It’s fine. They’re just pants. Just, give me a second.” Nodding slowly, Tae stepped closer until he was touching Yoongi’s knees, but he waited until Yoongi took a deep breath and raised his hands. Tae bit his lip slightly when Yoongi undid his button, both of the guy’s hands shaking a little as he pulled down Tae’s zipper, so to distract himself and reassure his boyfriend, Tae reached for Yoongi’s face and lifted it up toward him as he felt Yoongi’s hands pulling at his slacks.
“They’re just pants,” Tae said, smiling as Yoongi nodded briefly at him. Feeling freer and more like himself already, Tae sighed and kicked his pants off his ankles before leaning down and kissing Yoongi again, tugging on his neck before pulling on his back and hips to stand up. “Okay, your turn, stand here for a minute.” Yoongi did, his hands clasped behind his back while Tae bit his lip again, looking him up and down.
“What?” Yoongi finally muttered, his cheeks red as he looked away.
“Just admiring you,” Tae said. “Should we play yes or no again, or can you just tell me what you want off first?”
“Don’t need to play a game,” Yoongi sighed, though he didn’t answer Tae’s other question.
“Shirt or pants, then?” Tae said, trying to follow Yoongi’s gaze as the guy’s head moved all around. Seeing that Yoongi’s hands were still clasped behind his back, Tae stepped forward, Yoongi’s head finally looking at him since he had gotten so close.
“Pants it is,” Tae smiled, pulling at Yoongi’s belt so quickly and firmly that Yoongi stumbled into him. “They’re just pants,” Tae reminded him as he pulled Yoongi’s belt out, the guy’s face flushed again, or, still. Untucking Yoongi’s shirt, he started to unbutton it to get it out of the way, Yoongi’s arms finally coming to his side so Tae could pull up his wrists and uncuff his sleeves, sliding the shirt off and leaving Yoongi’s undershirt on for a second. He did lift up Yoongi’s forearm, though, unable to resist kissing his tattoo there, and he kissed Yoongi’s cheek while he was at it. While Yoongi had to know what was next, he still gasped and grabbed Tae’s wrist when Tae reached for his pants, causing Tae to still and frown immediately.
“Hold on,” he said, swallowing thickly. “I’ll do those.”
“They’re just pants,” Tae said, but he let go and took a step back, watching as Yoongi ducked his head and proceeded to practically rip his pants off with no finesse or show at all.
“I know, I know, but my brain is telling me I should be ready for something else.”
“For what?” Tae said, cocking his head as Yoongi stood back up and crossed his arms over his chest.
“Hot guy, no clothes, bed,” Yoongi mumbled.
“Oh, are you getting hard?” Tae said, trying to look down only to have Yoongi cover his face and groan. “Oh, are you? It’s okay if you are, you know. It’s only natural. Actually, I’d be quite flattered—”
“Oh my god, please shut up,” Yoongi groaned again.
“Okay, a little rude. I also don’t like being told to shut up,” Tae said, tapping on Yoongi’s head as he shook it. “Okay, okay, let’s go sit on the couch and watch some mindless violence to calm down.”
“But I’m tired,” Yoongi mumbled behind his hands.
“Well, I have too much energy still, and if we get in bed, I’m just going to keep kissing you, so we can watch TV for a bit.”
“I do not see how that will help,” Yoongi said, only lowering his hands when Tae had walked away.
“Honestly, it will probably me more antsy,” Tae said. “Maybe a boring nature documentary would be better. Yoongi, come sit down. Please.” The guy mumbled as he shuffled over, but he at least sat down right next to Tae. “Here, you find something,” Tae said, handing him the remote and reaching for Yoongi’s closest leg to pull over his own.
“You’re the one who wanted to watch something,” Yoongi complained as he started to flick through the options. Tae didn’t really want to watch TV, so he didn’t say anything. He really wanted to just kiss Yoongi again, but he had promised to reign it in when he needed, so for the time being he would just feel along the guy’s shin and knee and thigh as much as he could. Yoongi wasn’t particularly muscular, but he didn’t seem to have an ounce of fat on him, so his legs were lean, and his muscles were obvious, especially in his shins.
“What’re you doing?” Yoongi mumbled when Tae kept turning his leg in all directions it could comfortably go as he ran his hands up and down it, kneading it in some parts and just skimming over the skin in other parts.
“Admiring you,” Tae responded. “Kneecaps are weird, huh?” Yoongi’s leg flinched when Tae poked his knee, and, realizing his search was futile, he turned the TV off and flung the remote down to frown at Tae. “Oh, you have good reflexes. Bet you were good at sports. Did you play any?”
“Basketball, some.”
“Oh? That explains the tattoo. I know nothing about basketball,” Tae laughed. “I did some soccer growing up and some judo, but I was super uncoordinated as a kid, and as I got older I seemed to fit the artist stereotype too much. Too soft for sports, or whatever.”
“You’re really fit, though.”
“Only because I met Jin. Guy was, still is, obsessed with working out. Or about looking good. I suppose it’s good for me.”
“So they say,” Yoongi joked back, watching Tae’s fingers trace over a small scab on his knee. “One of my many falls,” he explained.
“Oh, I have so many knee scars,” Tae said, lifting up one of his legs to demonstrate. “Mostly from the farm and simply falling down. Nothing epic. Do you have any epic ones?”
“No, not that I know of. Though tattoos are scars in a way.”
“Pretty scars,” Tae said, smiling up at Yoongi and running his hands up and down the guy’s leg again. He stared at the pretty man sitting next to him until his he couldn’t wait any longer, surging forward and kissing Yoongi. He had caught him off guard, but Yoongi only muffled a complaint once before kissing him back, so Tae took that as his consent to reach for him, pulling on both of his legs and his waist until he practically lifted him into his lap. Yoongi huffed a little but turned willing, reaching for Tae’s shoulders as Tae laughed a little and kept one arm around Yoongi’s legs to keep him steady and another around his waist to hold him close.
Yoongi was only slightly taller than him sitting in his lap like this, but Tae found that he liked it. Even as Yoongi closed his eyes, Tae watched him tilt his head and try to find a better angle, so he tried to stay as still as possible to let Yoongi explore, though after a seconds Yoongi broke away, panting and resting his forehead on Tae’s cheek.
“Okay,” Tae whispered, running his hands up and down Yoongi’s leg again. “I’m not done kissing you, though. So you better get comfortable.”
“Hold on,” Yoongi breathed, hanging onto the couch behind Tae.
“Okay. You’re so cute. Do you always get riled up so easily over kissing?” Yoongi shook his head, his hair tickling Tae a little as he ducked down into the space between Tae’s neck and shoulder. Tae could feel Yoongi’s lips trembling, their slight pressure on his collarbone cooling his warm skin. “Has it just been a while or what? I really don’t mind, I’m just wondering.” Yoongi shook his head again, squirming enough for Tae to let go of him so he could move. He kept his hands lifted and waited and watched as Yoongi lifted himself up, his head staying ducked down, until his knees were positioned on either side of Tae’s hips, and he lowered himself back down into Tae’s lap.
“Is that better?” Tae said, and, feeling Yoongi nod, he put his arms back on him, trailing up his back and under his shirt to feel how flushed the man was. He nipped a little at Yoongi’s ear, because it was one of the only things he had access to, and Yoongi pressed his nose and forehead harder into his neck, so Tae just kept feeling his back, alternating between pressing his fingers into the skin, noticing how Yoongi would curl up a little when he did, and barely trailing his fingertips over his skin, tracing the bumps of his spine under his shirt, watching when Yoongi’s back arched a little at the sensation.
“You’re just really sensitive, huh?” Tae mused. “You like me being gentle, huh?”
“Yeah,” Yoongi mumbled, sighing a little into Tae’s neck. He had lifted himself up a little on his knees while Tae played with his back, and as Tae removed his hands, he focused on the rest of Yoongi enough to realize why.
“You’re so cute,” Tae chuckled, lifting the bottom of Yoongi’s shirt and noticing how much the guy twitched when he touched his stomach. “Relax, yeah? Your legs are going to shake if you try to hold yourself up like that for much longer.”
“’m fine.”
“Yoongi, I’m not going to touch you unless you want me to. But I know that can’t be comfortable. Come on,” Tae said, dropping Yoongi’s shirt back and moving his hands to Yoongi’s thighs that obviously shook when he touched them.
“So you like me being gentle, and there’s nothing wrong with that, even though you’re acting all shy, and it hasn’t been too long since you were with someone, but, it’s, what, been a while since someone’s been gentle with you?”
“No one,” Yoongi mumbled, still trying to keep himself off of Tae’s legs.
“No one what?” Tae mumbled right back, running his hands over the side of Yoongi’s boxers and past the elastic and under his shirt and up his thin ribs.
“No one’s gentle.”
“Oh,” Tae said, his fingers twitching a little under Yoongi’s shirt. He brought them out slowly and smoothed them down Yoongi’s trembling legs before wrapping them loosely around Yoongi’s neck, running his thumbs along his jawline. “Okay,” he whispered, kissing Yoongi’s temple before peeling his head back. Yoongi didn’t put up a fight, though his eyes were closed, and his arms flopped back onto Tae’s shoulders as he finally sat down on Tae’s thighs, biting his lip a little as he did so.
“It’s a lot, huh?” Tae asked, checking Yoongi’s face for any signs of discomfort, especially when Yoongi nodded slightly. “Okay. It’s a lot for me, too. I don’t really know what I’m doing here. I don’t want to hurt you, so I’m trying my best to go slow. I can be gentle. You—you’re trusting me a lot, I can tell. I’m gonna try not to mess that up, okay?”
“Yeah,” Yoongi breathed, nodding a little again.
“Okay, well, I’m going to tell you something, and if you’re comfortable, I want you to do it, okay?”
“Okay,” Yoongi whispered, his eyes still closed.
“I’m going to kiss you, and I just want you to do whatever you want. Don’t think about it. Don’t worry about me. Just do what feels good.” As expected, Yoongi frowned at the suggestion, and Tae brushed his thumbs along his cheeks, tsking a little. “I know, that’s a lot. But you can if you want. If nothing else, just kiss me back, okay?”
“Okay,” Yoongi said, nodding a little and opening his mouth just barely.
“Cute,” Tae said, biting his own lips and licking them before slotting them in between Yoongi’s. He didn’t expect Yoongi to do much, and sure enough even sitting on Tae’s thighs, the guy was still super tense. Even as he sighed into Tae’s mouth and tilted his head and moved his lips and tentatively tried to lick at Tae’s tongue, he was still holding back.
In fact, the second his hips actually twitched, just barely, but enough for Tae to notice since they both weren’t wearing anything but their boxers, Yoongi broke away and almost fell off of Tae’s lap as he tried to get away, but Tae wrapped an arm around his waist to keep him still as Yoongi shook his head.
“Okay, whoa, hold on, you’re okay.”
“Sorry,” Yoongi muttered, ducking his head again. Tae wasn’t one for punching people, but he felt like it now, seeing the way Yoongi looked so scared. He wanted to mess up whoever had messed Yoongi up so badly. He wasn’t even sure what he was afraid of, and that bothered him more than anything else.
“Don’t be! You’re fine. You didn’t do anything wrong. I want you to. I asked you to. Come on, Yoongi,” Tae sighed, trying to lift the guy’s head only to have him wrench it away. “Look, do you want me to help? Do you want to go to the bathroom and take care of it? I won’t care.”
“No,” Yoongi mutterer, shaking his head. “Stop looking at it.”
“I’m—Yoongi, I’m not looking at it. I’m looking at you, which you would know if you opened your eyes,” Tae said, trying not to sound annoyed. His eyes only left the guy’s face when Yoongi sat up on his knees again and reached around to move Tae’s hand so he could stand up. Yoongi turned around with his back toward Tae, and Tae could tell he was re-adjusting himself, so he scrubbed his hands over his face and suppressed a groan as he stood up.
“Yoongi, please don’t leave. Please look at me. Please talk to me.”
“I’m not used to having sex with feelings or whatever,” Yoongi mumbled, his arms obviously crossing over his chest.
“That’s sad, hyung. That makes me really sad. Are you saying you don’t have feelings for me? Or you don’t want to?”
“No, idiot,” Yoongi said, spinning around and huffing. “I have all the feelings for you.”
“Aw,” Tae pouted, “even hatred?”
“A little, yeah,” Yoongi sighed, staring up at the ceiling for a moment. “This is all too embarrassing to deal with.”
“You don’t have to be embarrassed, hyung. Yoongi, please,” Tae pleaded, stepping closer to Yoongi but keeping enough distance between them in case Yoongi wanted to move away. “Please tell me what the problem is. Is it me? Is it just not trusting me enough? I mean, that takes time, I get that. Is it something else? Like, your past experiences? Is that keeping you from trusting me? What are you worried about? If you tell me, maybe I can—”
“Control,” Yoongi mumbled, staring down at the floor. “I have to have it in my life, but I don’t want it when I’m with you, if that makes any sense. And I don’t know what that makes me. Pathetic? Weak? Messed up?”
“Yoongi,” Tae breathed, distance be damned as he reached for Yoongi’s face, “that doesn’t make you any of those things. That just makes you human. That’s—that’s a big deal, though, and complicated, and does take trust, a lot of it. But just don’t get confused, yeah? Don’t confuse trusting me with not trusting yourself.”
“What?” Yoongi said, blinking up at Tae.
“I mean, you may trust me before you trust yourself, but you may tell yourself you don’t trust me. I mean, you may know that I’m not going to hurt you and I am going to be gentle, but you may tell yourself you don’t deserve it or you should feel bad about it or something. Don’t keep yourself from being yourself. Make sense?”
“Yeah,” Yoongi said slowly.
“So, tell me, honestly, what are you feeling right now? Do you feel embarrassed?”
“Are we playing that stupid game?”
“Yes,” Tae grinned as Yoongi rolled his eyes. “Yes or no, do you feel embarrassed?”
“Yes.”
“Is it because you don’t trust me?”
“No.”
“Do you feel like running away and hiding right now?”
“Yes,” Yoongi said slowly.
“But do you really want to?”
“No.”
“Do you want to stay here tonight?”
“Yes.”
“Can I cuddle with you but not do anything else so you’ll know I’m here for you and want nothing but for you to feel comfortable?”
“Yes,” Yoongi blinked, licking his lips as Tae smiled at him.
“Will you believe me? Will you feel safe and protected and free to feel whatever you want?” Tae said, watching as Yoongi’s eyes darted over his face and his eyelashes flickered. “Yoongi?”
“It’s not that—”
“Yes or no, Yoongi?”
“But, I mean, I want to—”
“Then just say it.”
“Yes,” Yoongi sighed. “I’ll try my best.”
“Goodness,” Tae chuckled, kissing Yoongi’s forehead. “Okay, close enough. I feel like we’ve made progress. Do you feel like we’ve made progress?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, the game is over now, hyung,” Tae laughed, kissing Yoongi’s cheek again. “Let’s go to bed now, yeah?”
“Yes,” Yoongi said, making his voice sound like a robot.
“Hyung!”
“Yes,” Yoongi repeated, a tiny smile on his lips as Tae dragged him to his bed.
“Stop,” Tae huffed as they laid down.
“No.”
“Yoongi,” Tae said as he curled around his boyfriend, remembering to be gentle.
“Yes?”
“Are you going to be quiet now so we can sleep?”
“No,” Yoongi said, smiling even as he closed his eyes.
“You’re the worst,” Tae huffed, poking Yoongi’s ribs enough so the guy elbowed him. “Seriously, ow.”
“No.”
“Yoongi.”
“Yes?”
“Yoongi, I really like you, you know?”
“Yes,” Yoongi said slowly even as his voice sounded like his own again.
“And I’m really glad we got to spend so much time today together, even if I never want to go to such a fancy restaurant again. I’m down for simpler dates. Sweatpants and walks around the park and stuff. And, hey, if I wake up in the morning and have an overwhelming desire to just smother you with kisses, I’m going to, okay? Is that okay?”
“Yes,” Yoongi said.
“Hyung, you like me, too, right?”
“Yes.”
“Will you kiss me back, hyung? If I kiss you, will you kiss me back?”
“Yes,” Yoongi said, grabbing Tae’s hand around his hip to hold close to his chest.
“Aw, hyung, you really like me, huh?”
“Yes,” Yoongi whispered, smiling as Tae pressed his lips against the back of his neck. He turned his head enough to look up at Tae then, enough to see Tae smiling back at him, enough so he could lift up his head and kiss him back as promised.
“Good night, Yoongi,” Tae smiled down at him. “You’re getting really good at this game, aren’t you?”
“Yes,” Yoongi said one more time, smiling even as he closed his eyes, Tae’s fingers firmly secure in his own, his boyfriend’s breath softly colliding with the back of his neck as he drifted off to sleep.
