Saying Sephtis is many things at once wouldn’t be an overstatement. After all, his whole raison d’être is based on being deceiving. He’s like a chameleon, he can adjust himself to various situations as well as the people he meets — he can be very soft-spoken and ostensibly charitable, forbearing; he’s lived through enough decades to register and memorize how others act in certain circumstances. His facade isn’t unbreakable, though. When he’s driven into the state of heightened anger or frustration, he doesn’t care about nurturing those appearances anymore.

The best way to really get to know his true nature would be by observing him when he’s all by himself, with no one to trick or persuade. In such moments he’s quiet and focused, his facial expressions and body language he often wildly exaggerates is suddenly muted. What may come across as surprising is his buried sincerity, which is reserved for those he — to an extent — cares about. If he considers someone worthy of his interest, then he’s more willing to show the merrier aspects of his personality.

Although there are more powerful demons above him whose orders he needs to listen to, he hates being told what to do with a raging passion. Nonetheless, he keeps his promises (well, kind of) and whenever there’s a task waiting to be completed, he won’t postpone it. He always rises to the challenge and in his dictionary there’s no room for mistakes or shortcomings. Sephtis is diligent and organized, he keeps everything in check and even the littlest complication or misstep can throw him off-balance.

Magical Powers:

Pact magic — Sephtis can perform pact magic provided that the interested individual provides him with a pure, innocent soul of a mortal being.

Tracking magic — immediately, and whenever he feels like it, he can teleport himself to the spot where the person he has a pact with is currently at, however, he cannot foresee where he will end up.

Summoning magic — from the preparation side the ritual to summon Sephtis isn’t too demanding, what’s most important is the person’s undivided attention and concentration they need to put into into each action. The ritual must start with drawing two connected triangles forming a sharp digit eight on the floor/ground with white chalk, next a lit black candle should be put on each vertex, then the person should douse each candle with own blood (usually it happens by making a cut across the palm and putting the bleeding hand over the flame) while repeating in deep focus: With all my earnest will, I call upon you, Sephtis.

Non-magical Powers:

Playing instruments — he has a flair for music, but specializes mostly at violin and piano.

Persuasion — having mastered the art of choosing the right words and putting on the best deceptive mask, Sephtis can easily talk others into something they probably wouldn’t be so eager to do etc.

Empathy (towards people) — despite being stern and ruthless on a daily basis, he has no problem imagining himself in another person’s shoes. Understanding their feelings doesn’t affect him on an emotional level or anything like that, it just makes manipulating them less strenuous for him.

Weaknesses: 

Hand-to-hand combat — he’s the type to look down upon (unfounded) physical violence, but besides that he simply doesn’t have the agility it takes to directly clash with someone.

Letting go — be it grudges or entities, Sephtis unable to bury hatches and recognize when it’s the right time to forget about something/somebody. His stubborn and possessive nature doesn’t help here.

Greediness — due to the hierarchy he always felt like the worse one, so it became natural for him to be jealous of others’ achievements and whatnot. Therefore, he’s blindly striving against all adversities to surpass those, who stand above him on the ladder.

Job they do: Librarian at the Insolitus Academy Library  Previous job experience: Over the years Sephtis used to pick up some odd jobs, none of them was long-term, so eventually he settled at the Academy’s Library.

Date of Birth:  21 June 1897  Crime Record: In different realms there are laws and rules he doesn’t fully agree with, but he still tries to respect them. In the Demon Realm his youthful disobedience towards the authorities almost caused him serious trouble, so since then he stifles this inner defiance. Has your character attended Insolitus Academy in the past? Yes Background: 

I. Origin. Origin. Everything and everything has a story going delving far into the roots, fate forced Sephtis for the narrative of his background. Abandoned at birth, there was much to find out about his parents as well as his own nature, but his efforts at getting to the bottom of his history had been rather fruitless. Much to his surprise other entities residing in the Demon Realm came through with a helping hand. In his early years he was cared for and trained for the work he would soon have to handle by himself, something his parents allegedly were allegedly engaged in by default, too — pacts. At first he could hardly understand what those were for. He knew demons and what they could be like, after all, he was a part of their kin, so who and why would want to make any kind of bargain with them? In his glimmering eyes there was no use in throwing yourself into anything half as unfavorable, because between the lines it was crystal clear that the deals made with them were far from beneficial. Eventually he was encouraged to entomb his prejudice and care for the duties he was born to fill. That’s all he ever was, a pactdemon — and in his view, a mere drop in the ocean of the more powerful and privileged dark beings. Inferiority complex started to lace his story with a delicate thread.

II. At some point it felt like his feet were strutting atop earth more frequently than across his native realm. And it came as quite a shock to him, the fact that so many were calling for him to strike an eternal deal with him in exchange for ephemeral goods, which he assumed they could freely live without. But that part really was none of his business. As long as they were willing to provide what he asked for, he had no further questions. What he at first resented, promptly he took delight in. He felt needed and desired, and before he noticed, there was already a fair group of his, as he began to call them, charges. Pacts were a mutual transaction, although he made sure it would look only like his generosity. Sephtis could teleport himself wherever any of the persons were, whenever he had a whim and wants requiring fulfilling — and they varied from bodily pleasures to violent delights meant for his gaze. He found himself eerily enjoying downfalls, moral and not solely. Rich businessmen jeopardizing their status, living examples of chastity and unwavering incorruptibility who in the end let their desperation devour them… There wasn’t a sight more endearing than this, than irreversible collapse.

III. To pass the time and gain some firmer knowledge and skills, Sephtis was advised to join the Insolitus Academy. He was thrilled to finally stroll down the hallways of the school he had heard so much about, so much it nearly was mythical to him. Instead of strictly magical subjects, he excelled majorly in Art History, Manipulation and Music. The last one became his new absorbing penchant. Violin was his instrument of choice, but he bore an equal liking for piano. The weeping sound the strings could gush touched the parts of sensitivity he wasn’t aware of. After some years spent in the Academy, he planned on making music his avocation, but the compositions he hoped to share with the world one day were tossed into the drawers and the pactdemon remembered what he was really made for. He did several jobs here and there, mostly as a form of additional entertainment. Sephtis landed a position in the school’s library, where he can let loose his inclination for perfect order and he still has a while to indulge himself in a little bit of literature, all while awaiting a call from another soul in need.

I LEAVE FOR KOREA ON MONDAY.

Alex and I have been planning this trip for upwards of a year now. We’ve been scrapping our finances. We’ve been cutting expenses and doing our best to keep our budgets in line. All so we can spend this once in a lifetime trip together...and it’s almost here. 

We decided to break up the flight. First to save money. And second (mostly second) to experience one more new place together as an added bonus. We settled on Amsterdam. 

We fly out Monday evening around 5:30 pm, and arrive in Amsterdam about 9 am their time. We then have a 15 hour layover. Which sounds terrible to most people but I am SO PUMPED to have an extra long lay over to enjoy the city. We won’t have time to do things like the Anne Frank Museum or anything like that. But we can sight see and explore cafes and hit the red light district which is amazing in itself. 

After Amsterdam, we fly directly to Incheon. We have to catch a train or a cab to our apartment in Seoul from there. 

We have 3 days planned in Japan, and the remainder of the time we are traveling all over Korea. I’m so excited to see where he has already been, to try the foods I’ve been craving, to meet the people and MOST OF ALL to see where the sport that I’ve devoted my life to began.
