Week 11: Central Vietnam

After a terrible overnight bus - imagine 5 cots across the back of a stuffy, crowded, bumpy bus - that almost caught fire when the A/C burned out, we finally made it to the quaint Hoi An, where just up the coast in Danang the Vietnemese were celebrating Liberation Day (we always seem to travel on national holidays).  We treated ourselves to a beautiful boutique resort, Ancient House River, a few minutes' shuttle outside of the UNESCO heritage site old town, which allowed us to enjoy the great food and touristy ancient quarter while indulging in the quiet space of our hotel (with pool!).  The first day we walked around to get a feel for the city, well-known for its plethora of tailor shops, old houses, and Chinese assembly halls.  We found a romantic cafe set back in a garden, away from the hustle bustle, called Brother's Cafe, enjoyed delicious Vietnamese iced coffee (strong coffee with condensed milk) and a good game of Scrabble on the riverfront. The next few days we ate various Hoi An specialties, including "white roses" (shrimp dumplings), fried wontons, and cao lao (pork with thick rice noodles and fresh mint, basil, and coriander).  We ate at Mr. Kim's Cafe des Amis, whose set-menu restaurant has been satisfying tourists for 20 years (he showed us books of rave reviews, and also tutored us in the art of preparing the perfect bite of each Hoi An dish served).  Morning Glory restaurant was  another favorite; we had roast duck with banana flower salad and bok choy and mushrooms, a great combo.  We also found a great banh mi sandwich, an inconspicuous street stall that one local told us was the best in all of Vietnam (he had driven 45 minutes to buy 5 of them for his friends... the warm bread and generous au jous were great touches).   We took a fun cooking class that included a short boat ride to the local market to select our fresh ingredients. We tried fresh sugar cane juice (ngoc mia), Sara hand-cranked rice noodle dough for our noodles, and the chef collected quail eggs for one of our dishes (our guide was a great photographer as well). Back at the hotel our local chef showed us how to make fresh spring rolls, mi quang (rice noodles with pineapple, tomato, onions, prawns & chicken), and banana flower salad with beef.  Yum.  Our last day in town we bought a ticket for the world heritage sites that granted us admission to 5 of the 18 attractions.  We had fun in the Chinese assembly halls, which included huge dragons made of ceramic mosaics.  Our last night in town we met for drinks with a hip Canadian couple from Montreal who play in a band together called Burls (we bonded during the frightful bus ride earlier in the week). After Hoi An we took a beautiful (and brief) train ride north to the imperial city and former capital of Vietnam, Hue.  Less touristy, but hotter than Hoi An, we spent much of our time during the day indoors watching knock-off DVDs in our hotel, a nice vacation from our vacation...  We took a boat ride down the Perfume River, enjoyed a cyclo-ride across the bridge, found respite from the weather with a massage, and walked along the night market on the riverfront.  We also managed to get in a full-day city tour, which included seeing several ancient emperor's tombs, an incredible Kung Fu display, incense and conical hat-making (purely for tourists), the forbidden city inside the old citadel (much of which was bombed during the American war), and a riverside pagoda set in a beautiful Buddhist bonsai garden.  The tour ended with another ride on a dragon boat, past the pink lotuses floating in the river (set up for the upcoming birthday celebration for Buddha).  Our best meals in Hue included chatting with Mr. Cu, the owner of Mandarin Cafe, whose photographs lining the walls depict everyday life around Hue (the banana pancake with chocolate sauce and ice cream was also amazing).  We ate at the non-profit Japanese restaurant JASS, the product of a hospitality training school for street kids, and visited a non-profit gift shop, Healing the Wounded Heart, run by handicapped artisans who create handicrafts out of recycled materials (they also run a cozy tea shop).  We also loved the street pho, sitting on little plastic stools, eating on little plastic tables, drinking Saigon beer with ice, just like locals... On Shabbat, we took a pleasant overnight train to Hanoi.  We had our own cabin, complete with Dalat wine, Pringles for bread, and nightlight for candles.  Add to that a great game of Scrabble (and another victory for Seth), and we couldn't ask for a more authentic traveler's Shabbat.
