Master Chitow Hostel, Kaohsiung, Taiwan
I did some planning before my trip to Kaohsiung. For accommodations, I wanted to look for some place with average price. I also expected the services, sanitary, and atmosphere of the accommodations are within acceptable standards. Since my goals were set, I googled a bit and surprisingly found a newly opened hostel which looked quite chic from the appearance, and the price was also within my budget. I thought I should give it a try and booked immediately.
This new hostel is called Master Chitow, meaning the master of fun, traveling and life in Taiwanese. It locates in the heart of Kaohsiung City, just 30 meters away from Formosa Boulevard MRT Station. When I came out from the MRT exit, I saw a streetful of wedding dress shops and some historic buildings lining neatly along the main street. Among them, Master Chitow sat and glowed quietly in dim light.
As soon as I entered the hostel, I noticed the stylish wooden décor and the intriguing tube-shaped recessed lights. With the addition of the steward’s warm greeting, the hostel suddenly made me nostalgic.
There is a long wooden table surrounded by cozy sofa armchairs in the common room on the first floor. It feels great to eat snacks and exchange traveling experiences with new friends met there. If you wish to enjoy some privacy, you can sit at the bar, or you can use the guest workstations in back of the common room. They are individual booths with brick wall designs for you to work or relax in.
Before entering the room in upper floors, guests are required to change slippers. Shoe cabinets are right next to the elevator behind the common room. The hostel provides lockers for guests to keep their shoes in.
Later on, the steward led me upstairs. I was awed by the modern design of the hallway. LED lights and the white walls interwoven into an artistic presentation of a map.
Although the beds the hostel offers are bunk beds, they attend well to guest privacy and security. They have entry access control; that is to say, we need their access control cards to enter the hostel front door and the room we stay. Also, every guest has their own safes in the room to keep their valuable properties. Most important of all, the bunk beds are separated with thick wood walls. Each individual space has blinds and a small wall lamp just like a capsule hotel. You can enjoy your privacy without bothering your roommates, which is not common to see in regular hostels.
The next morning, Master Chitow amazed me again with their breakfast! Usually, hostels offer simple jam, toast, and coffee; however, Master Chitow indulged guests with a long table of all-you-can-eat dishes. There were diced cheese, ham, colorful fruit salad, fresh juice, omelets, roast toast, homemade dessert, etc. The foods were all freshly prepared by the cook at the bar and were healthy and delicious. It reminded me of my home and mom. This hostel really treats its guests well!
After the feast, I was ready for some Kaohsiung run-around! The location of Master Chitow facilitated me to move around each scenic spot. With a three-minute walk from the hostel, you can easily get to the famous Dome of Light in Formosa Boulevard MRT Station. With two more MRT stops, you can get to the Pier-2 Art Center and Love River. With three more stops from Formosa Boulevard MRT Station, you can get to the beach of Sizihwan Bay and experience the charming and laid-back vibe of the harbor city - Kaohsiung.
Although Master Chitow runs in the form of a backpacker inn, its interior space design and thoughtful services strive to satisfy every need of its guests to the fullest. I think it worth every penny to stay in Master Chitow. If you are looking for really neat accommodations with affordable price in Kaohsiung, Master Chitow is just what you want!
