TAKACS at Gates of Hell - July 2022

So I kind of made my first movie or as I am calling it a “Thrashumentary”.
I use to roadie for the band TAKACS. Aside from hauling drums, I would film stuff occasionally. I had a good amount of footage to edit together.
I feature some behind the scenes stuff. It’s mostly performance based. My focus is definitely on the music.
This film is also my tribute to this band. Some of the best times I had in my twenties were at these shows with these guys. Going through this footage brought back a lot of memories and put a smile on my face.
For most of you, this might be your first introduction to this band. I hope I made a good first impression on you and made you fan.
For some, it’s a trip down memory lane.
Either way, I hope you enjoy. Thank you.
The Legendary Shooting Career of Olympian Karoly Takacs
Arthur Godsell of Long Island, New York, leverages more than four decades of experience in his role as president and co-owner of NY's Godsell Construction Company. Beyond his professional pursuits, Arthur Godsell enjoys sporting clay and skeet shooting. The sport of shooting has origins extending back more than 500 years, and has long been part of the Olympic program. Today there are 15 medal events, 9 designated for men and 6 for women. These events include 10M air pistol, 10m air rifle, trap, and skeet, the latter of which has been dominated by American Vincent Hancock, who is the event's only multiple gold medal winner. However, perhaps the greatest achievements in Olympic shooting belong to Karoly Takacs of Hungary. Takacs was part of Hungary's world championship pistol shooting team in 1938, but suffered a career-threatening hand injury that year from an exploding army grenade. He was unable to shoot using his dominant hand, but was undeterred in pursuing the sport at the highest level. He trained himself to shoot using his left hand and went on to win the gold medal in the 25m rapid fire pistol event at the 1948 London Games, establishing a new world record in the process. Four years later in Helsinki, he repeated as the 25m rapid fire pistol gold medal winner. He was 42 years old when he won his second gold medal.

Take time for Takács. Take time to really listen to some fabulous music

Look ahead to December 3, 7:30 pm. Make time that night evening to go hear LIVE music. Chamber music. For me it is the quintessential classical ensemble, the string quartet. UW Student tickets are 10$ ! online, or by phone at 608-265-ARTS (2787).
We are all in luck as the Takács String Quartet takes the stage that Sunday evening . They also bring along a special pianist friend, Garrick Ohlsson to expand to a mighty five and treat us to the Brahms Piano Quintet most exciting tune filled powerful roller coaster ride . The slow Adagio and sneaky Scherzo afford you chance to relax before your are again whisked off on an exuberant rhythmic and melodic journey.
I first heard the Shostakovich String quartets on the radio WFMT when I lived in Chicago . This was about 1982. I remember it vividly. Laying on the couch as darkness set outside on a winter night. What in the world was this other worldy music? String quartets did not sound like that. The 15 String quartets were presented in order one a Sunday night basis. I could not wait for Sunday night.
Mozart. The balm that heals, music that offers sanctuary in dark times. The Ear recently wrote of the hope and the reminder of enduring goodness that Mozart brings to our souls.
I think we all need a little Mozart about now.
So is it the repertoire that the Takács has so thoughtfully selected? Is it the ensemble of a string quartet plus a friend? Or is it the magnificence of this particular ensemble of musicians known as the Takács that compels me to attend this concert and share my enthusiasm? I believe it’s the recipe of all three and its going to be a delicious sonic meal!
Get your tickets now! Treat yourself to really listening LIVE and submerging yourself into the beauty and angst and energy of this wonderful program Sunday night December 3 at 7:30 with the much acclaimed Takács String Quartet.
