oikawa takes takeru to an aquarium for his birthday because he knows they do a mermaid show in one of the big tanks. what he doesn’t know is that he ends up more amazed than his nephew when he sees not a mermaid but a merman in the water.

he moves through the fish with insane elegance, his big, muscular body flowing like silk, propelled by a long tail he handles like it’s actually real, its turquoise colour contrasting with his dark skin. no diving googles (tooru thinks it’s for the aesthetic, but his own eyes sting just from thinking), but he is wearing a gold crown entangled in his black hair, matching the bracelet wrapped around one of his thick biceps and the wrist chains.

oikawa can’t take his damn eyes off him because it’s truly hypnotic the way he moves, the way his torso and waist ripples, the way he swings his thick arms to swim. but then tooru feels takeru gently tugging at his hair, and when he looks up, finds a toothy smile and bright sparkling eyes.

“let’s go closer, uncle tooru!”

“what?” tooru blinks, his voice way too high, while takeru kicks his little legs where he sits on his shoulders.

“let's go closer! i wanna say hi!”

“but—”

“do you want me telling everyone you gave me the best gift ever or not?"

and obviously tooru can’t say no to that, being the proud man he is, so he sighs dramatically and drags the both of them to the front row spot a mom with her baby just left.

takeru waves his tiny hand to get the merman’s attention and oikawa almost forgets to breathe when the young boy swims over, bigger, broader, and way more majestic than he looked from three rows back. he smiles at takeru, pressing one hand to the glass and waving with the other. takeru giggles, and tooru glances at his nephew, lips curling into a soft smile when he sees him so excited, trying to make a heart shape with his hands.

then the merman flips onto his back, brings his hands to his mouth and oikawa’s eyes widen as he watches him blow out a stream of bubbles cupped between his palms. the guy fans out his arms just in time to rise the bubbles in two perfect columns, shaping into a heart right there in the water.

takeru squeals, just like all the other kids and a few adults, as the merman swims back, beaming with pride and then his big green eyes meet oikawa’s. and oikawa swears his heart skips a beat or two when the merman winks and smiles at him before drifting up to the surface, out of view.

“soooo cool!!” takeru yells, practically vibrating.

“yeah” tooru whispers, cheeks flushed “super cool.”

what oikawa doesn’t know either is that he’s going to see that same merman again, this time on land, during his first class of junior year, introduced as the teaching assistant iwaizumi hajime.

Oikawa and Takeru Headcannons (Timeskip and non timeskip)

non timeskip: Takeru calls Iwaizumi "Uncle Hajime" since he's known Iwaizumi as long as he's known Oikawa.

Timeskip: Went to Shiritorizawa. People think it's because he thought it'd be funny since Oikawa hates Shiritorizawa but its actually because he did apply to go to Aoba Johsai and didn't get in but he did get into Shiritorizawa.

Timeskip: One night while Oikawa and his mom were over for dinner Takeru thought it would be a good idea to casually announce that he's going to Shiritorizawa and while his Aunt was super happy for him Oikawa was sitting next to her about to have a stroke.

Alternate Timeskip: Wanted to go to Shiritorizawa since he thought it'd be funny since Oikawa hates it so much but didn't get in so he went to Aoba Johsai.

Timeskip: Plays the setter and his jump serve is better than Oikawas (in highschool)

Non Timeskip: Always has a bandaid on. He's one of those kids who will fall out of a tree then get up and climb right back into that same tree even if he has a big cut on his knee.

Timeskip: Perfectionist in volleyball and rewatches tapes of his and his teams games after each match to see what he can improve on.

Timeskip: After Oikawa sent him a picture of himself and Hinata in Brazil, during the next training camp the boys and girls volleyball club went to, Takeru found Natsu and they became friends.

Non Timeskip: Sometimes when Oikawa "babysits" him, Oikawa will bring friends over (sometimes just Iwaizumi and other times he brings Iwaizumi, Hanamaki, and Matsukawa) and Takeru acts like he thinks it's weird but he actually feels really cool and brags to his friends at school that he hangs out with highschool 3rd years.

Timeskip: When it comes to vb practice he's always the first one in the gym and the last one to leave.

Timeskip: Keeps his circle of friends small. Sure he has friends in volleyball but he'll mainly hang out with only 2-3 of them outside of school. (kinda like the Seijoh four)

Non Timeskip: Loves Pokemon. Whenever Oikawa and Iwaizumi come over he always asks them to battle Pokemon with him.

Both Timeskip and Non Timeskip: Takeru's super polite, especially to adults and elder people. His coaches have even said that he's one of the most polite players that they've ever coached.

Both Timeskip and Non Timeskip: Takeru and Iwaizumi have always sort of bonded and Iwaizumi sees a lot of his younger self in Takeru.

Timeskip: Takeru made it to nationals all three years of highschool. In Takerus first year of highschool when Oikawa found out Takeru made it to nationals he was so happy that he started crying (secretly)

Timeskip: Both Oikawa and Iwaizumi went to watch Takeru play in nationals every year.

Timeskip: When Oikawa and Iwaizumi go to watch Takeru play in nationals Iwaizumi wore his official Japan personal trainer uniform and Oikawa wore his official Argentina volleyball jersey. They both also wore their highschool volleyball uniform jackets.

Non Time skip: Whenever Takeru is with Oikawa he always makes his lovely uncle buy him food or else he complains to his mom that "Uncle Tooru refused to buy me any food or drinks all day"
