Taking 5 the film is so one direction fanfiction coded and I will forever love it! A movie I’ve loved since forever and the main song I love so much and I hate it’s not on streaming platforms!

Taking 5: What’s In A Name? The Internet and Anonymity
I have had my Xbox gamertag since the early days of Live, back in 2003. At the time I was in college and, like most people, using the same handle for a lot of the early internet. My biggest presence was on the Star Wars discussion boards on TheForce.Net.
And so, without too much thought, I made my Gamertag: Ice Jedi.
While it did represent me back in the late 90s early 2000’s it started to feel a little long in the tooth 10 years ago, when the Xbox 360 came out, and Xbox Live became more prevalent. I thought about changing it... but couldn’t find something that I liked.
When it came to sign up to make a Tumblr in 2008 I selected Eightbit (“eight” being the center of my given name Creighton) and then created Nerdology (hi!). For Twitter in 2010 I couldn’t get either so I landed on SensibleMadman (a phase from and about Don Quixote). I think Nerdology really fits the community here on Tumblr and I think calling myself both sensible and crazy on Twitter also does that service (and myself) justice.
But over on Xbox, my longest running active social account, I’ve been stuck in the past... until now.
Yesterday Major Nelson announced that 1 Million Xbox Live Gamertags that were created on the original Xbox and were never migrated to Xbox 360 would be up for grabs today, starting at 2PM EST.
A few years ago (maybe 5?) I tried messaging the person who had ‘eight’ to see if they would give it up. It’s clear from their Xbox Live profile page that they never migrated to the 360 - they have 0 Gamerscore and 0 friends. I got no response.
I don’t know if ‘eight’ is going to be one of the handles up for grabs. And I probably won’t know until I take a peek at 2PM. But now that it might be an option... I’m torn.
Ice Jedi is such a perfect time capsule. It represents me from 2003 at the moment I created my Xbox Live account. And I’m going to be a little sad if this tiny bit of my own history disappears.
I’ve spoken about this in person, but unsure if I’ve ever written about it here, but I really miss the old internet, the anonymous internet. The place where you can take on the life of another character and hide away from whatever is going on in your every day life. And actually, anonymity was actually one of the main reasons why I joined Tumblr in the first place and it’s why I didn’t choose a version of my name for Twitter.
On TheForce.Net no one knew I was a high school student with few friends. I was just Ice Jedi, one of the staples of the Spoiler Free boards. It didn’t matter who I was, I was contributing to the community and engaging in discussions that mattered to me (like: who was Count Dooku really, and what was his relationship to Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas).
The rise of Facebook got rid of that internet. It made things more permanent. More real. I don’t know if I would have joined TF.N if I had to give my real name and upload a profile picture that was a photo of me.
People have this perception that anonymity is something bad. As something people use who are promoting hate speech, but I have only experienced the opposite. My Facebook is stagnant because my real name is on it, and I would hate to overwhelm family, employers, whomever, with links to tech articles, Star Wars gifs, or actual deep thoughts. I can accomplish all three of those things here, writing as Nerdology (and I thank you all for that, truly, I do).
This was all a long winded rout to ask, should I update my Gamertag? Or leave it as a time capsule?
What do you all do in these situations. Should a name be permanent or fluid? Ice Jedi no longer represents who I am, but rather who I was.
If I wanted to represent me, Creighton in 2016, then I think I should update it. But as a slice of the internet from 2003 it’s so perfect.
