Jack White – Taking Me Back

Single Review: Jack White - “Taking Me Back” b/w “Taking Me Back (Gently)”

It’s the dichotomy of Jack White in one single.

“Taking Me Back” is the idiosyncratic White, the one who makes music that’s difficult to digest even when it’s intriguing.

“Taking Me Back (Gently)” is the traditional White, the one who makes music that goes down like sugar; even when it’s derivative, it’s intriguing.

The former is a wash of fuzzed-up power chords, synths, a herk-and-jerk melody and White singing like a man wearing comfortable skivvies. It’s White at his experimental apex, not particularly engrossing but entirely attention-grabbing.

The latter is an entirely different song, identical lyrics notwithstanding. White sings like his balls are being lightly squeezed in a vise against a backdrop of fiddle, acoustic guitar, rhythm section and a piano that was apparently rescued from a Western saloon circa the 1880s. It’s White in his Americana discomfort zone, entirely engrossing but not particularly attention-grabbing.

Both have their merits.

Some will love them both.

Others - read: Sound Bites - will prefer one over the other. But each song spotlights one of White’s many musical guises. And no matter how an individual listener’s tastes bend, together the tracks demonstrate what makes White a guy to follow even if his current path isn’t your bag.

For the next fork is likely to bring the sound you seek.
