Ephesians 6:16 (NASB) - in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
I'm listening to the episode where Vox Machina meet Kynan again and they're all just so ready to add someone new to their group there. Like "oh, let's just send him on missions because he's a fan." Or even Vax being all "I'll train you when I get back and then you can join." Like, are they prepared to do that for every young man and woman who wants to join them? If not, maybe that isn't the best idea. They'll only give (at least) others false hope and really, Vax is right in that it's not safe. I don't know. I think their emotions (they didn't seem to really react until the tears started, after all) are completely blinding them to the fact that bringing on a green kid is a pretty terrible fucking idea, especially since then every kid will think they have a chance to join up (let's face it: they have to have more fans than just Kynan) and it's not fair that Kynan can join when they can't. And, like, look at what happened when Tary tried to join. Admittedly, I don't know how much of that was because Scanlan left and they were mad at Sam but still. Just random ramblings. Ignore me.
Lmao after seeing that post where someone said that P&P isn’t written as a resistance against the patriarchy, I regret describing it the other day as “two idiots falling in love” because that’s what it is on the broadest level but it misses all of the intricacy that makes Elizabeth a memorable heroine and the book a true classic.
I really really love Jane Austen novels, okay? And it’s just like… context for a novel is important. Yeah, Elizabeth’s attitude is nothing particularly unusual today but man, in that time period? Her attitude is almost unheard of. Especially when she had no brothers and her estate was entailed. Like, she was literally flirting with the possibility of becoming a burden upon her family.
I don’t know. I just have a lot of thoughts.
Lent starts this week on Ash Wednesday and many people, myself included, may inadvertently get flashbacks to years gone by with having to give up sweets, chocolate or crisps (while in school anyway) and collecting for Trócaire Boxes. But is this really how we should be remembering Lent? Just as a period of self-denial? Or should we be looking at it differently? I think we should. This year Lent runs for the “40 days” (not in actuality, it’s really more like 43) between Ash Wednesday on March 1st to Holy (or Maundy) Thursday on April 13th and culminates with Easter Sunday on April 16th. While many Christians use Lent to try and imitate Jesus Christ when, according to Matthew 4:2, He “fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished” (NRSVA). While giving things up for Lent works for some people, it doesn’t work for everyone. Over the past few years for Lent I have tried taking something up for Lent, so in effect, I have given up giving up for Lent. This could be
