@takingturnsatrandom replied to your post: i cant believe edgar wright cast 1990s madchen...
Is this a real thing or a joke
Lily James just looks, with the specific costume, hair and makeup choices, OUTRAGEOUSLY like Madchen Amick as Shelley Johnson in Twin Peaks and I feel like it was intentional
Any thoughts about about drain flies?
I love them. I’ve heard of “heavy infestations” getting obnoxious for people but in our previous homes there would always just be 1-5 of them at a time, minding their own business in the bathroom. Basically every house in Florida has them and most people never notice.
Though they look like tiny moths they really are a type of true fly!
In regard to WTNV: you should listen to episode 79 (lost in the mail). I think it's a good example of how they can still manage to make really meaningful and narratively good episodes without building the greater story arc. Also it maybe made me cry a little
sounds good. im mostly stuck in the 50s right now which is mostly mediocre formulaic weird stuff so its understandably frustrating rn. >:V
I don't think I've ever seen you post about unicorns, have you developed mythology around them at all?
Unicorns are close relatives of Behemoths, and are thus part of a fictional group of ungulates. I haven’t drawn them yet, but I’m take medieval tapestries as my main influence design wise:
(fun fact: my mom sewed a copy of this years ago, and it’s been hanging in my family’s living room since as far back as I can remember)
They’re also gonna take a bit from Rankin Bass’s design from The Last Unicorn, because I’m always a slut for Rankin Bass:
The fact that this design also takes a lot from those same tapestries is a bonus.
I’m going to try and include some of the creepier/weirder mythological aspects of unicorns in my mythos for them, like their weird virgin obsession and tendency to stab people, but I’m not going to downplay their association with virtue and heroism along with it - I don’t like the modern trend of trying to play up the “evil” aspects of traditionally “good” mythological creatures. It feels so trendy, in the shallow “oooo I’m so edgy” way. It’s more interesting and honest to just portray them as morally complex instead - but that’s just my opinion.
I’ve also been thinking of jokingly throwing in a MLP inspired subspecies of dwarf unicorns, but I’m not sure I want to invite the discourse that might bring. I’m already treading the line as it is.
re: unicorns, I know you haven't delved a whole bunch into writing about eastern mythologies yet, but have you given any thought as to whether qilins (and related creatures) are more unicorn-like/dragon-like/something else entirely?
I really like the idea of a Kirin being a unicorn/loong hybrid (loongs are the name I chose for Asian dragons in my universe - it’s one of the least common English spellings of the Chinese word for dragon, but it’s also the only one that isn’t also used for a completely unrelated concept in the English language). I’m not sure if I’m going to go with it - it might be a little culturally appropriative - but it’s appealing from a soft speculative biology. Ultimately that’s a question for a much later date.
