❝ it’s nothing, ❞ came kíli’s muffled reply from under his brother’s hood. ❝ let me stay here a moment, you’re warm. ❞

❝ F -- Fili? What... What on earth are you doing here? ❞ Face slack with s h o c k , his hand hovers on the green wood of his door. ❝ You... Shouldn’t you be in...? Did you come here alone? ❞

“Master Fíli, if memory serves. I am surprised to see you without your brother keeping stride. What brings you here from the mountain?”

“Honestly, the day I understand this confounded cataloguing system will be the day I lose all the hair on my feet!”

“...—Was my garden declared the official hideout of all the royal family at some point? I must have missed that meeting.”

IT HAD ONLY been a few days after fíli’s official coronation, even if thorin had somewhat eased him into his role as king -- which meant that if had been a few days since they had seen each other for more than a couple of hours. surprisingly, kíli’s schedule had been just as full, what with the preparations to taking his rightful place as the king’s second in command and adviser. he joked that it left him with no time to see tauriel, though it was chiefly his brother whom he missed the most, the forced parting being foreign territory to him.
they were allowed respite come nightfall, ushered to their bedrooms to rest until they were needed again. even if they had already taken to sleeping in the same room -- a habit carried from childhood -- they certainly would have adjusted to it now, what with kíli unceremoniously shedding his furs (imposed on him by status and obligations) and flopping on his brother’s bed.
❝ i am exhausted. i do not envy you, brother. ❞
hey, do you recall when the war was just a game?
