Een bezoek aan Talbot House in Poperinge is voor een geïnteresseerde in de slagvelden van de Eerste Wereldoorlog een absolute must. Maar ook voor alle anderen is een bezoek meer dan de moeite waard. Het huis werd in de Eerste Wereldoorlog opgericht door eerwaarde ‘Tubby’ Clayton en kreeg als koosnaam Toc H. Het boek Talbot House, schuilplaats in de hel, geschreven voor Paul Chapman is een prachtig stuk historie over het ontstaan van Toc H en de wereldwijde verspreiding van deze organisatie. Chapman heeft vele dagboekfragmenten van Tubby en van de vele bezoekers toegevoegd.

Eerwaarde Clayton werd in 1885 geboren als Philip Thomas Byard Clayton in Australië. Op 2-jarige leeftijd emigreerde hij naar Engeland. Een oom van Tubby was tonnetje rond en had als bijnaam Tubby en op die manier heeft ook Clayton deze bijnaam gekregen.

Het boek zit vol prachtige anekdotes, heel vaak met veel humor en soms ook dramatisch. ‘Tubby’ heeft het geloof op een bijzondere manier in de ‘Every-Man’s Club’ verkondigd. Er was altijd voor elke soldaat ruimte om even de verschrikkingen van de loopgraven te vergeten. Velen ontvingen de communie om daarna naar het slagveld terug te keren. Menigeen kwam daarna niet terug. ‘Tubby’ was geliefd bij de soldaten, maar ook na de oorlog, bij de veteranen. Hij bleef tot vlak voor zijn dood in 1972 Talbot House bezoeken en bij de veteranen betrokken.

Een van de meest bekende veteranen die Talbot House in Oorlog maar ook daarna heeft bezocht is ‘The last fighting Tommy’, Harry Patch. Zijn laatste bezoek vond plaats in 2008, op 110-jarige leeftijd!

The book Talbot House, Schuilplaats in de hel (Hideout in Hell), written by Paul Chapman, is a beautiful piece of history about the origin of Toc H and its worldwide distribution. of this organisation. Talbot House (1885) on High Street in Winchester, Hampshire, England, has a distinctive double storey corner window. It was a popular local pub until 1975 but is now used for offices.

My entry for the Talbot House poster contest. Talbot House is a B&B in Belgium and used to be an English soldiers' club during World War I. My poster ended up in second place.
