"You're the guy who died! The one who's friends with Corey and-" "Twice." "What?" Josh raises his gaze to look at the guy right in the eyes. He lets out his puff of smoke slowly, not hating the way the blue eyes are stuck on him. "I died twice."

🚬 - A Taste for the ill-advised (josh/brett smol fic)

"I'm Brett, if you were wondering."

"I know."

A few seconds pass and Brett laughs at the awkward silence Josh is more than willing to let drag on.

"Because of Mason?"

Josh nods. It's better than to admit Corey occasionally gets insecure about boys Mason mentions and that his name came up more than once. Corey even showed him Brett's instagram to explain just how much of a threat he was. Josh hadn't been able to suppress a wince then, and Corey had started crying.

"How is Mason, by the way?"

"Very much in love," Josh says a bit protectively despite being deeply bored.

"And are you?" Brett asks cheekily and Josh glances at him for a moment. "I've never seen you with anyone here other than Corey."

☀️ - Sunshine (Theo can't warm up unless he's close to Liam)

They settle in Theo's truck and, just as he's about to turn the engine on, the chimera stops. He looks at Liam in the passenger seat.

“Did you drive my fucking car?” Because how else would it be here now?

“…No?”

“So who did?”

Liam groans in surrender. “How about if you don't want me to drive your car in a panic, you tell me that you're not feeling good. Or better yet, go to Deaton yourself to get checked out!?”

Theo grunts and starts the car.

“I was fine,” he mumbles.

“You know, you keep saying that word but I don't think you know what it means,” Liam says angrily, stopping his own subsequent chuckle so Theo knows he's serious.

Theo turns up the volume painfully high so he doesn't have to listen to Liam whining anymore.

🚬 - A Taste for the ill-advised (josh/brett smol fic)

"Hey, aren't you the guy who-"

Before he can even finish his sentence, Brett is punched in the stomach with conviction and much dedication. Hunched over himself as he pants, the boy's face turns a deep red, and Josh pauses, cigarette midway to his lips and a small smirk in the corner of his mouth.

"Can't you stay focused on me for more than two minutes, Brett?! Is it really that fucking hard?" a girl screams at the hunched boy's face before pushing him away from her and storming off. Walking past Josh, she groans a "he's all yours," while throwing him a nasty glare.

With a confused chuckle, Josh finally lights up his cigarette, staying there more out of laziness than to actually know what the guy was gonna say.

☀️ - Sunshine (Theo can't warm up unless he's close to Liam)

“It's no big deal, really, it’s-”

“Shut up,” Liam cuts him up harshly.

He does so. Liam closes his eyes and takes a few deep breaths. Theo is reminded that he should always stay wary of Liam, knowing the beta could easily break him in half (not that he'd ever admit it).

“Okay so first, I'm not angry, I'm just trying to… say what I want to say really well and not just blurt it all out confusingly.” Liam swallows and opens his eyes. Theo thinks they're glowing for a moment. “So first, you're not sleeping in your car anymore. You're sleeping here, if not in my bedroom, in the guest bedroom. There's no need to argue, I've decided.”

“But-”

“Second! While I appreciate you opening up to me enough to share this information, I can't help but feel like I wished I'd known this before. We're friends, right?”

“Well, yeah, I guess,” he stutters when he understands Liam is actually waiting for a response. And since when does he freaking stutter!?

“Okay, well, friends don't let other friends sleep in their car. That's just a fact.”

“Is it though?” Theo asks, trying to ease the tension with humor.

It backfires.

And if he wasn't sure before, he is now. Liam's eyes are glowing a bright gold as he sends him a death glare.

“Third, and I need you to really listen: I like helping you and spending time with you,” Liam says really slowly so Theo has time to process it. “I know you hate talking about feelings and stuff, but it's come to my attention - right now!!! - that you don't know this. Do you understand?” Liam growls, eyes still glowing.

Blushing is uncomfortable when you're not used to it and Theo pains to ignore it. Especially since his insides are all over the place like they are right now. He's not even sure he's breathing. So he nods. “Yep, yep, got it.”

"So what did it? Killing you, I mean."

Godsmacked by the lack of tact, Josh looks up and frowns at the tall boy. And he hates that too. Having to look up. Being 6 foot tall, Josh is used to look down on people and have other people look up at him. That's the one advantage he has on people and Brett ripped even that away from him. Freakishly tall asshole.

Raising his arms in surrender, Brett laughs again. "Hey, I almost got shot by hunters, okay? Multiple times. I won't judge." But his smile is far too carefree for Josh to consider it sincere.

Again, maybe he just likes picking at his scabs because he genuinely admits, "Theo."

"Theo…? Theo Raeken!? Are you serious? You- Wait, which time?" Brett's question stays unanswered and Brett slaps his arm like he can't believe it, earning his a nasty side-eye. "Both times?! The guy is as tall as Liam! I heard Stiles beat the shit out of him! You could've just raised your foot a bit and it would've hit him in the chin! Both times!? Either you're stupid or you just didn't want to live all that much."

Wow. No one had yet to put it so succintly as that. Josh freezes from the power of the last statement, the truth of it killing any desire to fight for himself. God, he could use a drink right now. He eyes the club's front door and then the inch of cigarette he still has left.

"Or both," he says, thinking it might make him feel better to be the one to say it. It doesn't. "Although usually people have the decency not to say anything," he adds but it's more to change the subject. "Well, people besides Hayden."

Josh snorts and looks at the moon again. He hesitates for a moment before he admits bitterly, "I'm in a committed one-sided relationship with alcohol."

"Any space for an affair in there?"

"What do you think the smoking is for?"

Brett laughs and Josh glances at him again. He looks like he actually thought it was funny. He looks happy. Of course he does. Assholes always look happy.

Josh taps on his cigarette again, the warm laugh still bothering him.

His eyes soft now that they've landed on her, Deucalion whispers gently, "Hi, Talia."

"Hi, Duke," Talia says with a smile before sharply turning to look at her brother. "Peter! The hell?"

"I’m being a feminist." He shrugs, lazily stepping out of his sister's walk-in closet.

Talia rubs an angry hand over her face. "What?!"

"Equal rights… to wear your beautiful high-heeled boots."

Talia doesn’t know how to respond to that.

"To be fair, it really completes the look nicely," Corinne adds.

Peter turns to her and mouths, “I love you”.

“And what are you supposed to be?” Talia asks with a disgusted expression. “A stripper?”

Peter frowns. “I’m a sexy angel,” he says, pointing at his halo. “Duh!”

Liam yawns and looks around. Seeing that this pack meeting is pretty much done, he shrugs and turns to Theo.

"Want to go home and go to sleep at like 9?" he asks, his eyes still burning.

"I'd love that, but you need to study," Theo yawns in response.

"What are you, the school police?" Liam gets up and pushes Theo back into the couch in petty vengeance when the chimera tries to get up as well.

Theo scoffs before trying to get up again. "You'd already be under arrest for no homework completed."

"You guys should do your kinky shit in your own home," Brett says, passing by.

"Shut the fuck up, Brett!" Liam barks.

"I'll stab you," Theo says under his breath.

He swallows a groan when the tall guy settles next to him against the brick wall. The deafening pulse of the nightclub is ringing in their ears, and yet, the guy feels the need to add to it. Josh should've known by now that the 25-feet-away-from-every-exit-and-entrance rule isn't actually to spare people from second hand smoke but rather to spare smokers from being trapped in unwanted conversations.

"You do not want to get tangled with girls with nose rings. You'll feel like you're in love while they ruin your life."

"We really don't have to talk, man," Josh says almost urgently between two puffs.

"Although that was Liam's cousin so I should've known to give her a wide berth…"

A snort escapes him despite his best effort not to engage and he looks down when Brett enthusiastically continues.

"So I was right! You're the guy who died! The one who's friends with Corey and-"

"Twice."

"What?"

Josh raises his gaze to look at the guy right in the eyes. He lets out his puff of smoke slowly, not hating the way the blue eyes are stuck on him.

"I died twice."

Silence covers them. Cars roll in and out of the packed parking, the light of the headlights make hints of gold and purple shine in their locked eyes. A slow smile emerges on Brett's face.

"Seems to be working for you," he says.

"If you say so." Josh looks down again, tossing the excess ash and watching it fall to the ground.
