Preview: 2022 Nice, a Fest
Nice, a Fest is a brand new music festival happening in Davis Square (Somerville, MA) at both Crystal Ballroom and The Rockwell, with loads of bands from Thurs. July 28 to Sun. July 31, 2022. I’ll be covering the festival with some dispatches, but here is what’s on my radar:
festival poster
Thurs. July 28:
Kicking things off at Crystal Ballroom are Boston rockers The Infinity Ring and there’s some other cool Boston rockers tonight as well.
Fri. July 29:
At Rockwell, there’s Talk Chalk (they sound like they could be on the Valley Girl soundtrack) and Squich (reminds me of WFNX in the 90s)! At Crystal Ballroom are Boston rockers House of Harm (Slicing Up Eyeballs will love this band) and Lowell indie rock artist Colleen Green (no relation, but she is worth checking out after listening to her music online) and Boston rockers Future Teens. Then at Somerville Theatre there is a midnight screening of one of my all-time favorites Wayne’s World, which turned 30 this year!
On both Fri. and Sat., in Davis Square’s Statue Park, there will be a Vendor Market, where several of the festival sponsors (and others) will have stands, including my favorite place in Watertown, Wanna Hear It Records.
Sat. July 30:
This is the one day of the festival where the fun begins early afternoon. At Rockwell is multi-hyphenate Addie, Boston’s Mallcops (they get credit for their name) and NYC’s Raavi. At the Crystal Ballroom is Boston pop-rockers Shallow Pools, Portland, Maine’s Weakened Friends (I remember them opening for Letters to Cleo a few years ago and just last year they played at Wanna Hear It Records for an in-store), and best of all, the festival headliners, one of my favorites Speedy Ortiz, who were formed in Northampton, MA and are now in Philadelphia.
My #5 Best Concert of 2019 was Speedy Ortiz when they did an Indie617 show at McGann’s Pub. Such a great show and afterwards the band signed my vinyl copy of their album Twerp Verse, which I named an Honorable Mention for Best Album fo the 2010s. Last year I got to review the reissue of their album The Death of Speedy Ortiz & Cop Kicker…Forever.
Then at Somerville Theatre is a midnight screening of Wayne’s World 2, which turns 29 this year.
Sun. July 31:
The festival ends on Sunday at Rockwell with an After Party featuring Philly trio Doll Spirit Vessel (who got a rave review in Spin recently) and festival closers Middleboro rockers Black Beach.
