Submitter's note: Bob Dylan's debut album had mainly standards and traditionals, with only two songwriting credits to his name: Talkin' New York and Song to Woody. House of the Risin' Sun was arranged by Dave van Ronk and, according to his interview in the documentary No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005), he was peeved that Bob recorded it first. No hard feelings, though, because the Animals' version became a huge hit. Hilton Valentine, the Animals' guitarist, claimed he used Dylan's chord sequence for the arpeggio opening to the House of the Rising Sun, which was No. 1 in the UK, USA and Canada in 1964.
