“needless to say, I’ve been doing Psycho Killer for some years, so I thought, well how can I do this song in a way that’s gonna make it fresh for me? I had an 808 beatbox... You know, drum machine at home, and I programmed it for the song Psycho Killer and I thought, ‘this sounds pretty good! and I can play it with an acoustic guitar, and who would ever think of mixing a kind of electro beat with an acoustic guitar?’ So I thought that’s what I’ll do. But I’ll do it like I do it at home, when I program a beat. I’ll just play it over some dinky little speakers and play the guitar along with it ... when I was writing this song I was thinking, uh, it was the first song I ever wrote--um, well I tried as a teenager but it was a failure so--I wrote this and I was thinking, uh, ‘what if, uh someone was writing an Alice Cooper song, but from a more kind of introspective point of view, so it wasn’t a kind of over-blown and dramatic as a lot of his stuff was, but kind of from a... Serial Killer’s... uh, a sensitive Serial Killer’s point of view.’ So I thought this should be a kind of... Lowkey kind of song, from the point of view of a killer who imagines himself as a very sophisticated kind of guy--so sophisticated that he can speak French, let you hear some of his high school French in the middle of his song, to let you know that he’s no dumbie, even though he may let go of control from time to time, he’s no dumbie.” DAVID BYRNE behind PSYCHO KILLER + his solo performance for the concert film STOP MAKING SENSE
