I had lead myself to believe that I was undesirable, and I designed the filter with the goal of proving myself correct. It was confirmation bias. I knew that if I set up unrealistic standards under the guise of compatibility, I would end up with the conclusion that I tried and failed. This seemed to me a more acceptable end result.

Some things in life just don't make sense. It's like all the confounding factors in the world decided to gang up on you.
