People continue to say that it’s sad that this is happening in 2015… What’s sad is the fact that we as a people allow a racist system to brainwash us into thinking that anything has ever changed. We need to realize that everything that we have been taught is an illusion. Through the abolition of slavery, to our fight for black suffrage, to our triumph over Jim Crow, we have indeed made strides against white supremacy. But do not dare think that the fight is over. Do not dare think that we are equal. Do not dare think racism is nonexistent. Since the inception of black people into this country, we have always been the targets of unwarranted violent acts of hatred. This year alone we’ve lost Sandra Bland, Walter Scott, Freddie Gray, Charles DuBose, the 9 lives in Charleston, among others that the national media has not covered. Everyday we risk our lives by stepping outside the confines of our homes. Whether it’s law enforcement, your neighbor, or the person sitting next to you in class, you are not safe NOR will you ever be safe until physical & political action is taken. The students being tormented in MU are not socially disruptive criminals walking around looking for trouble. They are young, black intellectuals that have overcome adversity && have been afforded a luxury that many young black people will never receive…a seat in a college classroom. Yet despite their success, they are still victims of violence fueled by white supremacy. This situation goes to show that no matter how far you get in life, what you achieve, or what stereotypes you break, you are still & will always be a "nigger" to the white man in this country. What’s sad is that we’re waiting this long to fight for change. What’s sad are the lives that are being lost in vain. What’s sad is the black child watching his/her parents being humiliated by law enforcement. What’s sad are those who fail to see that something more than a hashtag is needed to fix our problems. Please let this, as well as past, and future incidents inspire you to take action. Nothing has changed. Do not remain comfortable. Do not be distracted. Do not wait. I am next. Your brother/sister is next. Your cousin, daughter, mother, aunt is next. Your cousin, son, father, uncle is next. Educate yourself. Teach each other. Unite. Take a stand against 400+ years of perpetual injustice against our people. We are centuries late. The time is now. ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
