also cities would exhibit a greater level of passive noise absorption by the environment simply because of the buildings everywhere, so even if people aren't inside the buildings still do a lot to quiet the sound. anyway the more interesting question is how tightly packed can you get the entire human population and still have them all be physically able to clap and THEN how loud would the clap be? im a terrible person goodnight

No, you’re TOTALLY right! I just couldn’t find any reliable estimates for maximum human packing density. Clearly, we need to do some experiments. Quick, get me an empty room, some measuring tape, and 500 people with no concept of personal space!

I think that A. the only way to provide a satisfactory answer would be to provide a global graph of the sound intensity, but B. that would be pointless in the end because the areas with the highest population densities involve people living in buildings, and if everyone in New York City clapped their hands at the same time, for example, the main factor determining the overall noise transference would be the environment each person is in at the time.

This is true. And the environment undeniably plays a huge role that wasn’t really represented in the calculation I performed. For instance, gathering a large amount of people and clapping in certain canyons or valleys would create a deafening noise, whereas gathering a lot of people in the empty African savannah and clapping would merely disturb the meerkats.

I think you’re on the right track with mapping population density and using that to gauge the variation of sound intensity across the globe. For simplicity’s sake, we could assume that everyone stepped outside for this momentous occasion. Doing that calculation would still require a better way of gauging interference among large numbers of sound sources displaced by a variable distance, though, which I don’t really have. How disappointing.
