I got 22 hours into the new year before i bought a new tamagotchi.

Took out the old batteries and found minimal corrosion but on first test found an unresponsive first button so I opened and cleaned it out, small amount of battery leak corrosion had gotten in. The vinegar smell was a big give away. Now it runs like new.
