Travel AU + Fake Dating + “i know that it’s the thought that counts but this doesn’t even look like you thought about it.” + Tanaka and Bokuto
“Ryuunosuke, buddy.” Ryuu winced at Suga’s sympathetic tone. And then groaned when he registered the fact that Suga used his full name. “I know that it’s supposed to be the thought that counts and all that. But this doesn’t even sound like you thought about it.”
Ryuu groaned again and flopped onto the bed.
“That’s because I didn’t,” he admitted, voice muffled into the pillow but he knew that Suga would understand him perfectly fine. “I kind of panicked when Bokuto said he wanted to come and told him it was a couple’s only sort of trip and now we’re fake dating and I am in hell, Suga. Hell.”
“Well if you would just confess. You know? Tell him you like him.”
“Suga the last time I tried to confess to him I wound up talking for forty-five minutes about hockey sticks. I don’t play hockey. He doesn’t play hockey. I don’t even know why I know enough about hockey sticks to talk about them for forty-five minutes. I am a human disaster and I can’t.”
“You are a human disaster,” Suga agreed, “but you can. I know you can. I have faith that you can.”
“Your faith is incredibly misplaced but appreciated.”
Ryuu ended the call, cutting off Suga’s laughter, and groaned again. He was so busy groaning and calling himself all sorts of an idiot that he didn’t hear the door open or close so when Bokuto settled carefully at the edge of the bed he may have let out a small yelp of surprise. He could feel Bokuto’s hand hovering worriedly over him and he rolled his shoulder up into Bokuto’s palm in permission. Immediately Bokuto’s warm hands were patting and rubbing his shoulder and back soothingly.
“Are you alright Tanaka? Did you eat something bad? Did you forget to eat?” Ryuu shook his head against the bed and slowly rolled over. He missed Bokuto’s hands the moment they left him. “Is something wrong?”
“Nothing other than the fact that I am a horrible person.”
Bokuto shifted back looking like Ryuu had just punched him. He shook his head.
“No you’re not.”
“Yes I am Bokuto. I’m a horrible person and a li-”
“You’re not.” Bokuto cut in harshly. “You’re not a horrible person at all. You’re kind and generous. You volunteer for fire department and the animal shelter down the block from your apartment and are assisting the volleyball coach at the school Akaashi teaches at even though you’re not a teacher there and don’t have any kids so you don’t have to. You’re nice to strangers. The only people you fight with are Nishinoya and Oikawa and I honestly don’t even know if you’re actually fighting with them or just playing around. You make excellent ramen and amazing sweets and okay you leave your kitchen kind of a disaster but that’s just you and I like you a lot. Like a lot. And if fake dating is all I ever get that’s okay.”
“I made up the whole couples only part of this trip and asked you to fake date me because I was too chicken to ask you to real date me,” Ryuu blurted out when Bokuto finally stopped to take a breath.
“So, uh.” Bokuto bit his lip and scrunched his nose and looked even more adorable that Ryuu had ever remembered him looking.
“You wanna fake date me but for real?”
Listening to Bokuto’s laughter was so much better than listening to Suga’s had been just a few minutes earlier and, honestly, Ryuu was pretty sure he could listen to it all day long.
“I wanna fake date you but for real,” Bokuto eventually agreed. “For as long as you’ll have me.”
Ryuu wriggled around on the bed until he could put his head on Bokuto’s thigh and grin up at him. “Forever sounds like a pretty good amount of time for me.”
“Forever it is then.”
