I redid all my lines in color (not black), fixed my colors and proportions a bit, slapped on a simplistic stripe bg, and made a transparent edit. I spent the time to make this drawing something i could look at and love instead of feel grueling self loathing.

OOPS I SQUIDDLED

As soon as I found Rainbow's awesome Squiddle plushtorial, I knew I no longer had any excuse not to recreate my favorite tanglebuddies from the show in huggable magnetised plush form.

MANTLECHERRY & SPRAYTON FOR LIFE, GUYS oh my god, these two little guys were my broship before I even knew what a broship WAS. Mantlecherry was a background character for most of the first two seasons before Sprayton showed up in Counting Day, but I think I just loved how they just clicked. Even Berryboo was trying to involve Sprayton in the festivities DESPITE all his 'freaky Algaebraic stuff,' like it was her job to 'fix' him regardless of how obvious it was that he just wanted to get on with his math and, you know, maybe actually get the Counting done ASAP so the whole damn cove wouldn't fall into the Coldseeps for another year.

Mantle was the only one who just got it, that yeah, Sprayton's kind of cold (yeah I knOW I GET IT, THE ARCTIC SQUID IS COLD HUR HUR) and uptight but he's really just a little Squiddle with a big scary job- and the algaebraic ability is something that's part of him and important to who he is, not some nerdy obsession that shows he needs to get out more. From the way Sprayton acts at the start of Counting Day, you can kind of infer that he's not used to a whole lot of that kind of understanding.

NO I'M NOT CRYING IT'S JUST SEAWATER IN MY EYES

It's a shame neither of them were ever made into a plush back in the day (although at least it means they weren't subjected to the terrifying butcher job Tomy did on the main seven characters aaaAGGH DEMON EYES)

They're not perfect- I think what bugs me the most is Sprayton's stupidly massive far-spaced spots, but seriously, I dare anyone to try finding the right shade of pale blue, white-polka-dot fleece with EXACTLY the right size and density of dotting. It was pure luck that I found something even as close as this. They're huge fun, though, and the magnets keep them tangled together really well.

(I don't really ship 'em, though. I've got no problem with Mantlespray at all, there's some cool fic out there, but I kind of just like them as BFS, I guess.)

Incidentally, if you'd like your mind to remain generally un-broken it's a good idea to stay off the TV Tropes WMG/Trivia pages. The amount of detail Charles/Taylor slipped under the radar is insane. Like that 'Nana Haffy' Mantle's always going on about? Most likely something to do with Hafgufa, the mother of all sea monsters in Norse mythology, thought to be the origins of the Kraken myth.

Yeah. Which means all the time Sprayton's taking the mickey out of Mantle's 'precious Nana' in Algal Bloom, Algal Doom, he's blindly talking shit about the freaking Kraken.

Although personally, I'm still recovering from the shock I got when I figured out that Sprayton was voiced by the same guy who did that fucking sea otter in Don Bluth's ill-fated Moby Dick.

((hahaha the title is actually a pun ok it makes a lot of sense just read))

Feferi's fingers slipped through the tangled locks of hair, working out the knots slowly with her skilled hands. Jade's face contorted into pain every five seconds, mumbling, "Ow! Ouch!"

"Sorry Angelfish." The fuschia heiress sang lovingly with a bit of tension in her voice, and with one last comb through with a brush, sat back to admire her work. "Offishially finished!" She let out a deep breath. Faced flush, Jade turned around to face her.

"How does it look?" She asked sheepishly. It had been ages since she last let someone comb out her bird's nest. Years ago it had been her Grandpa with his thick fingers, calloused from handling guns but gentle as could be with her savage mane. Feferi she'd found, was even better. She'd hum pretty tunes of the sea into her ear during the worst parts where normally she would cry out and give her bare shoulders gentle caresses that sent shivers down her spine and distracted her.

"It really does look nice." She blushed, wrapping a strand around her finger and curling it. "But jeez it's a lot of work to take care of!" Absent mindedly her fingers roamed to play with Feferi's makeshift braid. The woman truly was a miracle worker. 

"I feel bad saying this but sometimes I think it might just be easier to cut it all off." Feferi sighed, and Jade immediately perked up. 

In the blink of the eye an idea popped into Jade's head and she hurriedly crammed Feferi's thick braid into the back of her shirt, and then collected her own and did the same.

"W-Wha-"

"Look at me?" She asked and Fef turned around, confusion written out on her face before laying eyes on her, then breaking into a pleased grin. 

"You did it!" Feferi cheered, admiring the way Jade looked with all her hair tucked into her collar, making it look like she only had hair to her shoulders. "No more tangles, no more knots, no more tears." She sang and did a little dance.

Jade giggled. The underwater princess looked a lot different without a trail of messy hair following her. It shaped her face nicely and made some of her features more noticeable, like her wispy eyelashes and her full pink-tinted lips. She blushed and tried to latch onto the mood.

"And we'll never have to apologize for hitting someone in the face when we turn our head." Jade shouted rebelliously, pumping her fist into the air and hoping onto the freshly pressed bed.

Feferi laughed and chimed in, "I won't ever have to waste money on hair products again!" 

They grabbed each others shoulders and pressed their foreheads together, eyes sparking with fire and determination. Then it slowly drained.

"I kind of like playing with your hair, though." Feferi admitted.

"I kind of like it when you play with my hair." Jade's fingers brushed against her skin and carefully pulled back out the braid from her shirt. Feferi's breath hitched, biting her lower lip. Their eyes were locked on each others and suddenly the room felt hot and Jade's stomach had butterflies.

"I kind of like you." It didn't matter which one of them said it as they pressed together, hands urgently seeking each other. Their lips locked and their breathing mingled together. While they kissed Jade felt Feferi ruffling with her hair again and she made no notion to stop her. Maybe if it got messy enough she'd have to comb it out again before bed.
