Tanota Takoyaki, Los Angeles, CA, www.takoyakitanota.com
Tanota had a stall at the San Gabriel Lunar Year Festival and I thought hot octopus pancake balls would pair well with cold milk tea. They had six kinds of takoyaki to choose from – the same puffy griddled balls made with wheat flour batter, octopus, ginger, green onion and tempura bits but with different toppings. An order of 7 balls (the small size used to come with 8 balls) was $6 with the option of adding green onion, mayo and cheese for an additional charge.
* Jalapeno takoyaki: 7 piping hot small golf size balls smothered in jalapeno mayo sauce, topped with seaweed and bonito flakes. The balls were very hot inside and the sauce was creamy and spicy. Their takoyaki is mainly batter – with just one tiny piece of octopus per ball. I like more going on inside my takoyaki balls.
