Submerged Forest on Tanybwlch beach, Penparcau, Aberystwyth. Yes I know, there’s not much to look at! However, this peaty layer, with its odd knuckles of 4000 year old tree trunk, is all that remains of the “drowned forest” that would have been here millennia ago. Eminent local Natural Historian, Arthur Chater, noted that it had first been seen in 1974, following a severe storm which had eroded the material covering it. Research has not produced any photos from the 1974 sighting, so these shots, taken in January 2017, will be the start of recording on this site.
I will be keeping an eye on it, now we know it is here, and making sure to visit after any more violent storms. Watch this space...
