Headcanon that Akira was an only child.
His parents always encouraged him to get straight A's in school, and to never get in trouble. But they were generally absent from his life, always focused on work, and hardly home. He had to learn how to take care of himself at a young age because of this. He made it all the way to high school like this, miserable, but trying his best to stand out for his parents, and to get their approval, and love.
And then one day, when he was walking home from school, he found a wounded duckling in a ditch. It was tiny, and filthy, and didn't seem to have any family. So, feeling a kind of connection with the duck, he picked it up and took it home, cared for it and helped it heal its wounds. He hid it from his parents for the longest time, and kept it, just to have some kind of family there when his parents weren't. But then his parents found out about the duck, and ordered him to get rid of it. They even threatened killing it. So Akira decided to run away with his duck, leaving behind everything, because when he thought about it, that duck was the only real family he'd ever had. It'd sat on his chest, and comforted him when he cried. It'd listened to him when he talked to it, it'd kept him company throughout lonely nights. He'd made it happy, and seeing it happy made him happy. That was his duck, and no one was making him get rid of it.
He'd been on the run for 4 days, walking across the forest in order to get away from the city. It was early in the morning when he stumbled across the secret headquarters of a certain underground facility. He would've walked passed it, too, if there had been any other word on that front sign than the one that was. Because that single, 4 letter word meant so much to him. Because if there was ever a sign from god, that'd be it.
So he strolled right in.
