jk real talk though happy anniversary to the game that started it all and particularly happy birthday Karate Joe! I know it was a bit lazy of me to leave this in flat color but at the same time I’m kind of fond of the look. :,)

People have been seeing me post this WIP on my WIP twitter for some time and originally I was only going to post it here since this is where all my polished, finished stuff lives, but something came up at the time I finished it and I didn’t have time to fully write out this post since there’s a lot I’d like to cover so I at least posted it because I was so happy to have finished and held off on this proper post until I could properly put down everything I wanted to say regarding it. ^^”
So this is my concept for DJ School 2! I wanted to do some fully colored, lined and shaded drawings for potential minigame sequels and me being who I am, this was the first on my list to go to. Glow sticks and rave themed, of course!
I came up with a gameplay idea I was really happy with too in this hypothetical DJ School 2, since it matches with the rave theme. A lot of sequels (first ones that come to mind for me are Fillbots 2 and Screwbot Factory 2) like to mess with the lights to try and throw the player off on visual cues, and I think a potential DJ School 2 could use this too! Particularly I think after the player stops the record after “break, c’mon, ooh!”, the lights go out completely and don’t come back on until the player successfully lands the following Scratch-O, where the crowd cheers for the success. And alternatively if the player fails that input, there is a very unsatisfactory slapping noise followed by the lights coming on, showing DJ Yellow holding his nose in pain after being smacked by his partner.
I’d like to think of even introducing a new mechanic like some of the sequels do to give DJ Yellow more stuff to do, I doubt it would be very complicated, but I think some actual record scratching would be cool as other people who came up with DJ School 2 ideas have done, and I’d like to see it as a sort of “repeat after me” mechanic where the player needs to copy the scratches Yellow does, as opposed to the minigame’s usual style of responding to cues with the same actions.
I’m not of a very musical mind so I can’t speak on what exactly I think the song of this should sound like, but my vision is of course a remix of the original DJ School with a far faster tempo and the music taking a much more electronic pitch, perhaps even bitcrushed to some extent. Who knows?
And to end off, the description I wrote for it!!
“You’ve proven yourself worthy at the DJ School, so now it’s time to take to the stage for a partner show between pros!”

When I make a colored sketch my thought process is basically “okay, I’m getting down a quick idea and throwing on a splash of color, no lineart, backgrounds or much shading” but somehow this colored sketch turned into a day-long project that I really ended up committing to. :,)

I tested sharing it on my twitter and people seemed (i think???) to like it but here is the AU that has been living rent free in my mind since the day I saw JJ Rocker... what if he... was a werewolf? He just looks like a man who would secretly be a werewolf aight? Not sure if it’s the super shaggy brown hair or the clown eyeliner that does it more.
In other words, everything is the same except on the night of the full moon JJ’s room gets completely trashed and Andy had to lay awake listening to his giant wolf mentor trashing said room and JJ also growls at him whenever he goes near his guitar because he’s bitter werewolf form isn’t dexterous enough to play it.
(Also I am very sorry for not having gotten to the sketch requests recently. I’ve been dry for inspiration but tonight was a really good motivation kind of night for me so I think I should be able to get back on the horse tomorrow! I’ve just been having a lot of highs and lows of “I kinda like the stuff I make!” and “nobody likes you” with a healthy dose of “these thoughts are irrational, I know they are and the fact that I’m still feeling them despite that angers me”. But besides the personal update I will try and get back to work on those!!)
I might post more of this and talk on it more if people are interested, the thought of this AU has just been... latched to my soul for too long lol
