Valandil was the youngest son of Isildur, born in Imladris shortly before the War of the Last Alliance. He never knew his father or his three elder brothers, for they fought for many years and on their return journey after their victory they were slain in the Disaster of the Gladden Fields. At this time Valandil was only thirteen years old, a child king, and his mother Cemniel served as Regent of Arnor until he came of age at twenty-one. He married Ahyarë, another orphan of the war raised in Imladris, and together they ruled for 239 years, longer than any other king of Arnor or Gondor. The heir of Valandil was Eldacar, a philosopher who knew peace all throughout his life. Eldacar was friends with Elrond of Imladris and wrote many treatises on the relationship between elves and men, the likes of which had not been seen since Andreth Saelind in the First Age. The only other mortal who could keep up with his thoughts was Culalmë, another philosopher, and through their spirited debates they fell in love and were wed. Eldacar was succeeded by his son Arantar, who likewise ruled Arnor in a time of peace and prosperity. After the deaths of Anárion and Isildur, the two Kingdoms of the Dúnedain were never again close, but it was under Arantar’s rule that relations between the sister kingdoms soured. Arantar and Anardil of Gondor attempted to organize a feast of reuniting, much like the Mereth Aderthad of the First Age, but their personalities clashed so terribly that the event was called off and communications between the two nations ceased entirely for nearly a century. The wife of Arantar was Vistariel, a singer; she too found Arantar difficult to live with, and as a result much of their marriage was estranged, and she bore him only one child. This son, Tarcil, inherited the Kingship of Arnor and spent his reign rebuilding the bridges his father had burned with his fiery temper. He was aided in this task by his wife Niëlinyë, a poet whose words of sorrow struck so deep in the hearts of Men that all were eager to seek reparations for the wrongs of the past. Tarondor succeeded his father Tarcil as King of Arnor, though he gave little thought to the affairs of his kingdom. His spouse, Lossëa, ruled Arnor in his name, teaching their son Valandur how to rule. Tarondor idled away his days, allowing Lossëa and Valandur to do his job for him, and few mourned upon his death. Valandur was a great king, ruling with the love of his people for fifty years. He traveled throughout the land, aiding the citizens of Arnor personally, in all ways striving to live up to his parent Lossëa’s teachings. Unfortunately, on one such journey his caravan was waylaid by orcs, and Valandur was slain defending his wife, Queen Tasarwen. Tasarwen survived the attack and returned with Valandur’s crown to the capital of Annúminas, where it passed to her son Elendur. Not wishing to suffer the same fate as his father, Elendur rarely left the city, instead spending his time gazing upward toward the heavens. Though he loved her dearly, his wife Luinaivë was a sickly woman who did not survive the birth of their only child, Eärendur, and after her death he became ever more reclusive, damaging the faith of his people in their king.
