This is a good point about empathy versus action, but sometimes there are things you can't do anything about, and some things JGY did not tell them because it was a choice between "do this and get/keep power, or don't do it and lose my status" and he chose status Some things you can’t intervene it. JGY is an adult, how do you tell the wife of the Sect Leader “stop hating the son of your husband’s mistress, stop being physically and verbally violent to him”? LXC and NMJ have no status there to make her stop, or get Jin Guangshan to make her stop, and every other sect will not approve interfering in personal family matters.

Yeah, I agree that they didn’t know EVERYTHING obviously, but like when it comes to Jgy “choosing” status??? The problem was, in his mind, he didn’t have much of a choice! His only options were a) maintain status by doing what his dad told him while getting beat by madam jin OR b) not do those things and...... be homeless??? like, he didn’t really have any wealth of his own, he wasn’t a talented cultivator that could just go rogue or join another sect, he couldn’t just leave and buy a house for himself and have a comfortable life somewhere. it was either do the shitty things his dad made him do, or... live on the street? find someone else to take him in and boss him around???? 

and for sure, lxc and nmj might not have been able to tell off the Jins (tho nmj doesn’t seem to have a problem telling people off on occasion), but they also could have done SOMETHING even if that something was just reassuring Jgy that he would have some place to go if he wanted to leave the Jins--because as far as we know, they didn’t do that! we know lxc KNOWS that jgy was getting physically abused, but did he do anything other than offer jgy sympathy? and nmj was too pissed off to even know that was happening!

obviously, things happen the way they happen for Plot Reasons, i just think it’s an interesting polarization. if Ixc, who genuinely cared about jgy, had taken steps to ACT on that concern, it would have given jgy a way out, and if nmj had been able to understand where jgy was coming from, i feel like he would have done SOMETHING to help the situation.

this also probably applies more broadly to the world at large when it comes to interpersonal interactions and social justice! in order to help others, we can’t just act OR be empathetic, we have to do both!

Perhaps not even fear of being like his father and uncle but turning out like his mother the murderess - he seems to have actively avoided finding out too much about what her crime was, could that be fear of finding out that he took after her in too much?

oh god, yeah, absolutely. I mean, there were no good answers there- either she was a violent murderer, his family was wrong for protecting her, and he was wrong for loving her, and her blood was in his veins- or she was unjustly punished, and the rest of the family were the monsters, and he still had that inherited unrighteousness. 

I think at some point LXC grew accustomed to not looking too closely. During their time in hiding, I’m willing to bet Meng Yao probably had to do some unpleasant things to keep them safe, and I think LXC probably just... didn’t ask. And of course there’s Meng Yao’s undercover stint in Nightless City. And everything afterward. He knew the answers weren’t going to be good, so he didn’t ask. And he overcompensated by trying to be as kind and good as he could be.

It turns out it is 100% impossible to write Wei Ying as anything other than a canonical idiot that he is, especially when it comes to his relationship. (Also getting him to shut up during sex is a herculean task, as I may have mentioned.)  Fortunately, I’m fully on board with his Evil Scheme of communicating gross devotion through filthy acts.

But yes, at least THIS bathtub wasn’t entirely destroyed.  The floors though... I suspect they may need some new woodwork done.

No. 8 with the fishing net (not fishnet, this looks like real fishing net I've seen) on his socks. And the rest of the ensemble. Can anyone tell me what in God's holy name is going on there? I like the veiling, and the gladiolus boutonniere is giving me pleasant "early Smiths" flashbacks, but the rest of it?

Ahem, YES, let us take a closer look at No. 8, shall we?  What we have here is an Ensemble™, an Artiste created a Masterpiece, yes?

We are wearing high-waisted red clown pants, overlaid by what I can only presume is a volleyball net (or possibly an actual fishing net, but since he’s also wearing Nike’s - both shoes and hat -  I’m inclined to assume they were going for a Sporty™ look, so volleyball net it is).  I’m not even sure where his arms are coming out of because I see no sleeves but he has what look like WINGS coming out of his back, but I think it’s actually a vest.  A vest which he’s wearing over a lilac cardigan (I think, again, we can’t be sure, for this is Art™).  Which is casually slung over a light summer coat of fiery red (doubtlessly to compliment the clown pants).  He MIGHT also be wearing a fuschia shirt underneath all this - AS ONE WOULD - truly, whoever put this look together was really just going balls to the wall.  Thank goodness for the pearl necklaces, they really bring the whole look together, in my opinion.  The woven brown scarf monstrosity on the other hand, makes me think of Isadora Duncan (i.e. how she died), but in his case this isn’t going to be a graceful, billowy death, but rather a swampy, embarrassing one, when it gets caught in the wheels of his motorcycle.  I think even his body language says it all here.  My son is an embarrassment and he knows it.  This truly was a very brave attempt to make him look stupid.  

Yes, but did they succeed?  No!  No they didn’t!  He still looks hot!  I don’t know how, it is a mystery, but let us all bow down to him in praise b/c WHAT THE LITERAL FUCK.
