TASK 002: A ESCOLHA.

Valerie já havia perdido as contas de quantas vezes havia escrito seu nome em um pedaço de pergaminho naquela semana. Nenhum deles, no entanto, havia chegado perto das chamas do Cálice de Fogo, sendo rasgados e jogados no lixo minutos depois. A frustração que vinha depois era muito maior do que o breve sentimento de alívio por sequer haver a possibilidade de ser escolhida para representar a escola. Sentia-se estúpida por pensar tanto sobre aquilo, quando a decisão já parecia ter sido tomada pela família e por seu mais novo grupo de admiradores. Estaria mentindo se dissesse que não gostava daquele tipo de atenção, de sentir que pessoas esperavam ansiosamente pelo momento em que Cardieux finalmente entraria no salão e colocaria seu nome do objeto mágico.

A hesitação vinha do medo de ter a farsa descoberta, afinal Valerie sabia bem que não havia tido nada de heroico no momento que fez com que os colegas parassem de vê-la como uma golpista certa e começassem a exaltá-la pela coragem de ter “salvo” um aluno curioso de um grupo de pégasos descontrolados. Não havia nada de especial ou excepcional sobre ela, a não ser os traços puxados pela parte veela de sua família, que por muitas vezes poderiam ser bastante inconvenientes.

Era fim de tarde e o ateliê estava praticamente vazio, Valerie havia deixado o projeto que havia começado de lado para ler as cartas da família, sentada próxima a um dos grandes vitrais do salão. Não havia nenhuma ordem explicita sobre o torneio, nenhum “você precisa fazer isso por nós” ou “é a sua chance de mudar seu futuro”, nada. E por algum motivo isso a deixou ainda mais angustiada, afinal sabia como os parentes e principalmente seus pais estavam cansados se viver às sombras das lendas da família. Ao buscar respostas para aquele comportamento, apenas duas opções rondaram a mente da francesa: eles não queriam pressioná-la, por acharem que não era necessário arriscar tanto ou eles achavam que ela não tinha a menor chance, afinal o que um Cardieux faria diante de desafios reais como os que o torneio provocava? O que ela faria diante de um dragão?

Lembrou-se da conversa que tivera com Niklaus após a abertura para a inscrição e se pegou pensando se o que ele havia dito realmente se tornaria realidade, afinal seu principalmente objetivo com o torneio não era participar como campeã, pelo menos não à princípio, mas caso acontecesse muito deveria mudar. Pensou nos melhores amigos, sobretudo na competitividade de Genevieve que já deveria ter se inscrito desde o começo, e até na conversa que teve com Astrid alguns dias antes, quando estava quase decidida a desistir. No entanto, fazer parte da escola responsável por sedear o evento ainda lhe trazia algumas vantagens, sendo selecionada ou não, e Valerie certamente conhecia aquele palácio como a palma de sua mão. 

Ao se dar conta de que seus pensamentos mais pareciam desculpas rasas sobre seus medos, bufou um riso frustrado diante de tantos questionamentos e possibilidades. O quão covarde ela poderia ser, afinal? Por outro lado, ainda havia certa inquietação dentro de si, uma vontade incessante de provar o contrário, afinal ela ainda fazia parte de Lucttore. Naquele momento a casa para qual havia sido selecionada em seu primeiro ano lhe pareceu a única evidencia de que talvez as coisas ainda poderiam ser diferentes.

Em um rompante de coragem, Valerie esticou o braço pegando um pequeno rascunho ainda sujo de tinta e um pincel, logo escrevendo seu nome sem muito cuidado, levantando-se da janela ao notar que o jantar já estava próximo. Aquela realmente parecia ser sua última chance. Os passos rápidos ecoaram pelos corredores que começavam a ficar mais movimentado com o fim das atividades, enquanto se direcionava para o salão principal. 

Valerie sentia o coração bater forte contra o peito, enquanto tentava afastar todas as dúvidas de sua mente, assim como ignorar os burburinhos pelo caminho. Ao chegar no salão, alguns alunos já se reuniam para terminar alguns trabalhos antes do jantar. Puxou o ar com força, apertando o pergaminho entre os dedos como se tentasse o impedir de escapar mais uma vez. 

O ritmo dos passos diminuiu ao que ela começou a traçar seu caminho até o cálice. Os olhos azuis fitavam as chamas do objeto com atenção, enquanto sentia a garganta ressecada pelo nervosismo. Cardieux sumiu o pequeno palco, passando pela linha etária sem nenhum problema, ergueu uma de suas mãos e esticou o corpo para alcançar a beirada do cálice, fechando os olhos apenas para se concentrar no momento em que o pergaminho deixasse suas mãos e fosse engolido pelas chamas azuladas.

Ao abrir os olhos novamente, Valerie soltou um suspiro baixo, só então notando que já estava segurando a respiração há um tempo. Engoliu em seco ao notar que um grupo de alunos de Beauxbatons a fitava com expectativa, ouvindo um ou dois gritos sobre si. Pressionou os lábios em um sorriso que misturava bem o nervosismo com certo entusiasmo. Não tinha volta para o que ela tinha feito, mas por um momento a bruxa pareceu realmente desejar ser escolhida, ainda que não soubesse quanto tempo essa sensação iria durar.

The Driscoll Estate (Huxley Abbey) | Springfield, Illinois | Headcanon

At the close of the Conduit Conflict in 2033 much of the United States was decimated by incendiary warfare. The War left northern Illinois an infertile wasteland too expensive to repurpose, leaving the Government the sole option to sell land for profit. To generate capitol for the restoration of infrastructure throughout the Country, Washington began to sell land to interested parties. Driscoll Industries, steered by Vincent, purchased approximately one-hundred thousand (100,000) sq. feet of acreage for seventy-million dollars. Soon thereafter he proffered thirty-million dollars for the design, development, and execution of his primary residence – The Driscoll Estate, or Huxley Abbey, settled in Winnetka; six miles north of Chicago.

By April 2034, the Estate’s Main House spanned approximately fifty-four thousand (54,000) sq. feet in length and sixty-eight thousand (68,000) sq. feet in width; an appendage of glass and marble and steel. It has twenty-seven bedrooms, a Mayfair Ballroom, premier Sitting Room, Conference Room, and state-of-the-art Helipad. The guest cottage upon the rear lawn houses the Estate’s Grounds staff. J.B. Proctor, an English architect commissioned for the Project, drew inspiration from Edwardian and Baroque models, with columned balustrades of marble lining the Estate’s front terrace featuring curved balconies vaulted with black iron.

The East Wing, or the residential corridor, hosts a three-floor bedroom layout. Upon the upper floors are approximately eight bedrooms spread evenly apart, each with an accompanying bathroom and ample closet space. Vincent’s bedroom is carved into a ‘fourth-floor,’ attic that spans the length of the House, accessible from the third floor of the East Wing. The Kensington Sitting Room rests upon the ground floor, serving as both a library and a place for Vince to practice the Piano. The Sitting Room leads into the Mayfair Ballroom, a high-ceiling, gold-plated entertainment venue used for hosting events and social fundraisers; it serves as a foyer during the Winter. Through the Ballroom is a Conference Room that rests on the ground floor of the West Wing, or the professional corridor, which hosts a two-floor Office layout. Upstairs from the Conference Room are two floors of evenly spaced Offices and restrooms.

The Professional corridor holds a total of twenty private offices. From these Offices, Vincent leads Driscoll Industries and all of its principal holdings, along with his personal staff of eleven advisers, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Global Strategist, and General Counsel. The purpose of doubling his residence as both a Home and an Office was to enjoy the convenience of running a Company of considerable magnitude without the inconvenience of constant travel.
