Ronan grew up the son of a shoemaker in the town of District 12. He was an only child so when his father died his shop got passed down to his son. Ronan had had a crush on Sara for a while and it was actually her who made the first move in their relationship as he had always been too shy to say something when they were younger.

Sara grew up in the poorer part of District 12 with four siblings, and like most people from the Seam she always had strong family values. She made sure that her daughter would be raised open-minded and tolerant towards people in the Seam.
