Isobel had never doubted that she would be a Ravenclaw. Her mother was a Ravenclaw, her father was a Ravenclaw, her father’s parents were Ravenclaws, and on and on. In her mind, she couldn’t be anything else. In the same way Isobel had always been a blonde, she’d always been a Ravenclaw.
It was for this reason that she hadn’t fretted when her parents had said their cool goodbyes on the platform of the train. While she was embarking on an entirely new journey, Isobel knew exactly where she was going and who she wanted to be. As a pureblood she’d grown up with tales of Hogwarts and the Ravenclaw common room, she was sure she belonged there.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t quite true for the other girl.
When Isobel sat down next to her on the train, she’d look positively terrified, clutching a book to her chest desperately. And so Isobel did what she always did: took charge.
“I’m Isobel MacDougal and I’m going to be a Ravenclaw. What’s your name?”
Her name turned out to be Sue, and Isobel very quickly took it upon herself to be something of a mentor. Sue didn’t know anything about the school and Isobel jumped on any chance to show off what she saw as her superior wisdom, answering any and all questions thrown at her. Isobel talked about the ghosts, the squid, the teachers, and found that the longer she talked the more calm she became. And Sue seemed nice, a little quiet, but nice.
It was of no surprise to Isobel that Sue was sorted into Ravenclaw. She could tell from the moment she’d met her, nose stuck into a book. There was a sense of relief there, too; Isobel wouldn’t be going this alone after all.
When Isobel had been called forward, she’d strode confidently towards the stool, head held high. This was it, this was where she joined her family’s legacy. Imagine her surprise when the hat didn’t call Ravenclaw immediately.
“Hmmm, quick as a whip, aren’t you? But with an almost vicious need to prove yourself… Slytherin might serve you well…. But with that thirst for knowledge, I suppose it can’t be anything other than RAVENCLAW!”
Frozen in surprise, it took Isobel a moment before she was scrambling off the stool, darting towards her table. She felt like her entire world was being knocked off kilter. Slytherin? Her parents would have killed her! She was a Ravenclaw, she’d always been a Ravenclaw. Attempting to mask her frown, she threw her arms around Sue and smiled.
“I knew it! I knew you belonged here too! Oh Sue, we’re going to have so much fun!”
