Sue looked as Isobel grabbed her hands and smiled sadly at them. She was always there, always standing strong and always making sure Sue was okay, even after all the pain she made her go through. It was interesting how things played out, at first they were yelling and right now the only thing Sue wanted was to hug her friend once again. Sue looked up, feeling that it was safe to look at Isobel now.Â
âIâm really sorryâ she said with a helpless smile. âIâŠI was careless, for the first time everâ she chuckled and sighed. Normally Sue was a bit uptight, a bit too cautious but with Isobelâs slight push she always ended up loosen up and took risks. Yet fear had always made her do careless actions with really big consequences. âIâŠI let fear get through me, I shouldnât have done thatâ She said as she squeezed her friendâs hands.
As Anthony asked a question, she knew he was still playing along but she wasnât sure if Isobel was buying it. She felt the girlâs grip getting tense on her hands and Sue tried to hide everything with a small smile.Â
âKorea, with my dad.â She said with a nod as she looked directly at him. She said a smile phrase so she wouldnât give too much information about it. âUhmâŠat my grandparentsâ house. Now my dad got a job in Seoul and we got a new place there andâŠâ she shrugged. âI guess It was a fresh new start for him. Heâs actually really happy about it.â She said as she drifted her eyes from him and smiled at Isobel. âI donât, I hate itâ she said as she wrinkled her nose and chuckled softly, trying to keep things light so Isobel would see everything was fine.
Anthony nodded. He could feel Isobel turn back and look at him. Not good. Isobel was always good at discovering details, and it was always worse with him since she knew him so well. She knew his ticks, and mainly, she knew when something was off. He lifted his gaze to look at her and then to Sue. It was the first time heâd met her eyes since they were in the tent.
Anthonyâs mind was completely blank; it was like static on the television. He scolded himself. He should have planned for this, he should have seen this coming. Then again, who would really see something like this coming so soon. Shit, it hadnât even been 24 hours since he talked with Sue in the library. He felt like shouting the truth out and just getting over with. At least Sue would bear witness if Isobel killed him.
When she said she didnât want to go back to Korea, his eyes widened slightly in both shock and joy. If she wanted to stay here then maybe things could work out between them after allâŠ.if they could get through this mess. He clasped his hands together and held them in his lap to try and make their trembling less evident. With his eyes still on Sue he spoke, smiling slightly. âItâs okay, weâre glad that youâre okay, and that you donât-you know, hate us or anything.â He gave an awkward half laugh.
âI⊠itâs okay,â Isobel accepted, acknowledging Sueâs apology for the first time. Maybe it really was time for them to bury the hatchet. To start towards rebuilding what they once had. Isobel may be petty, but even she had her limits. She wouldnât carry on hating Sue forever. âEveryone was fearful last year, even me. Itâs nothing to be ashamed of.â
As Anthony and Sue stared at each other in silence, Isobel simply watched. It seemed a thousand things passed between them those moments â love, acceptance, fear. But oddly enough, there was no anger in either of their faces. No pain. No coldness. Had⊠they seen each other already?
She was pulled from her thoughts when Sue spoke once more. Korea? That was her new home now? She wasnât surprised that Sueâs father was happy about it, though. He always was a cautious man. âA little far to visit over the break,â Isobel tried to joke and keep the mood light. But it looked as though Sue had to physically drag her eyes back to Isobel from Anthony.
Itâs okay, weâre glad that youâre okay, and that you donât-you know, hate us or anything. That was it? Just acceptance? Heâd told her all the things he wanted to say when they finally spoke. All the questions he had, all the pain he wanted her to acknowledge. Isobel knew Anthony and she had been sure that if he ever got the chance, the words would just come falling out the second he opened his mouth to talk to Sue for the first time. Suddenly, a lightbulb went off in Isobelâs head. Unless this wasnât the first time.
Releasing Sueâs hands, Isobel took a wary step back. She narrowed her eyes as she looked between the two. âHave you two⊠already spoken?â she started tentatively.
