Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Madagascan Vanilla Ice Cream
It’s not enough to be ‘vanilla’ these days. No one wants to be friends with someone who orders classic vanilla ice cream over flavours such as salted caramel and Italian tiramisu. Our good friends at Sainsbury’s understands that many fans of plain vanilla are closet lovers, too afraid to come out with pride.
So call it Madagascan Vanilla that’s made in Devon to challenge the geographically inclined and give it a premium label. Open the lid and you immediately notice that this vanilla ain’t no Snow White. It’s actually tinted with a touch of beige from the real vanilla extracts which has a nice fragrance to it.
Is it the vanilla lovers saviour? Sadly no. Despite a clean vanilla flavour and well balanced sweetness, it’s far too hard, even after 15 minutes outside the freezer. It scoops out into broken chunks, tastes more like iced cream than ice cream, and lacks the velvety texture on the palate. I’m afraid vanilla lovers will have to keep eating in the darkness, for now.

Man Opens Pack of Almond Biscuits And Finds... A Maggot
A man was disgusted to find a maggot inside a pack of Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference almond biscuits.
Andrew Cao, 34, purchased the pack for his wife Alice, also 34, on New Year’s Eve.
On opening the Italian snack they found something sticky and were shocked to find the wriggling grub.
Mr Cao from Chellaston in Derby complained to the supermarket giant and has demanded a full investigation into how the creature came to be inside the packet.

The father of two said: ‘It's just not good enough.
‘I checked online and they are still selling these biscuits. They should be pulled from the shelves until they've discovered how this happened.
‘I've asked them to investigate but they just want to ignore me. They say if I want them tested I should do it myself.’
(Picture: NTI)
He added: ‘Their standards have been dropping and the customer service is dreadful.
’When I complained, the lady at customer service just offered me the £2 back.
‘She said there's nothing wrong with me and so there won't be any investigation
A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said the matter was being investigated and added: ‘Incidents like this are extremely rare and we are sorry our customer had this experience.
‘We are investigating the matter further with our suppliers.’
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference
UK Supermarket Sainsbury’s taste the difference range offers “fabulous taste” according to their website, but how do their mince pies stack up against the competition?
As it turns out, pretty good.
Packaging does allow you to assess the pies before buying and includes the information that the pastry is “all butter”
A much more attractive pie than the standard co-op offering, with sugar topping and festive holly motif.
The all butter pastry makes for a good score as does the deep well defined filling; the combination of the two leading to a great overall taste. The taste will hit your wallet however, with a price of 33 pence per pie amongst the highest we've seen this year.
The high price does not hinder the pie enough for it not to claim top spot from CO-OP; achieving a final IPIS of 1223.438. You can head over to the rankings page to check out the overall list!

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Mango & Yuzu Yoghurt
Sure the yoghurt is actually quite pleasant, smooth, silky mouth feel with plenty of tropical mango punch weaved in the cream as well as a decent amount of mango chunks. But the big problem is the missing yuzu flavour which is half the advertised flavour equation. Oh wait, 0.3% yuzu juice? No wonder this dessert just tastes of empty promises. There is no discernable twang of the Japanese citrus fruit at all, just mango, mango and mango. To make matters worse, the photo of the fruit on the peel-back lid is a lemon, not a yuzu.
Ok so you might think I’m overreacting to something so banal, but you could’ve just brought a tub of mango yoghurt for less and not tell the difference. I’m getting quite tired of companies who market gourmet flavours like truffle, caviar, unicorn horn dust in trace quantities and advertise them like a 3 star Michelin menu.
The aftertaste is something we can all relate to: LIES!

Review 8: Sainsbury's Taste the Difference All Butter Mince Pies
6 pack, £2.50
Poor Sainsbury's, after Harrod's uber-pie, their TTD range is going to have to be pretty impressive. With this is mind I've gone top end with their bog-standard pie for tomorrow's review, to give them the best chance possible.
Anyway, this is a pretty pie with a pleasing off set holly logo that I rather like. And it smells nice too although there will not doubt be critique for a lack of olfactory opinion on previous pies so perhaps strike that from the record. Down to business, alongside the motif, there's a nice colouring and a tidy, shiny sugar coating which is all good for appearance's sake. First bite and it's not good, a very lemony filling is the first thing to hit one's palate, its not nice, in fact it's almost chemically. The pastry is completely flavourless and actually very thin. Seriously, this is the first time I've been grateful for a poorly filled pie and I'm actually only finishing this for sake of this review [that and I'm of the opinion that even a bad pie is still a pie...]. Hmm, little more to say than that last mouthful was somehow even more lemony than the first. Yuck.
Score: A pie-fail 2. Avoid, I will be. The only difference I can taste is that this doesn't taste like a good mince pie. Bad form Sainsburys. I have higher hopes for your cheapo version but avoid this like the proverbial - what a shame as it looked so pretty.
P.S. I have decided to succumb to peer group pressure and will go to Fortum's this week. Bullies. And can someone get me some Aldi pies? There's not one anywhere near me? Will collect from any work place in the WC1 area. Thanks....
