Ooooh, Food Writing Of Arda? Consider my...appetite whetted ;)
Okay so I have written one installment you can read already! (Prince Findekano's Favorite Vinegared Strawberries, G, 1.2k) Another one will be revealed in November with Scribbles & Drabbles (previewed here).
This is an ongoing series starring Alassennë, a Valinorean-trained chef who is hired to cater a Nolofinwean royal party during the Years of the Trees, and from there, becomes further and further enmeshed in Noldorin politics and infighting. Each work in the series will include a recipe I've tested. (His name, Alassennë, is a play on Travels with Alice, a collection of food writing by Calvin Trillin, one of my favorite nonfiction writers.)
I have a whole vision for this guy's life, Forrest Gumping through the Ages as a sort of mild-mannered bon vivant who gets himself in way, way over his head (let's just say the Helcaraxe was NOT a good time for him), and yet ends up improbably surviving disaster after disaster. He joins Turgon's people, goes to Gondolin, and is one of the refugees that makes it to Sirion, which I feel like has to be a fascinating food culture, mixing traditions, ingredients, and methods from a wide range of geographies and ethnic groups, all of whom have been forced to improvise and adapt as displaced people. Alassennë's a bit of a snob but a generally well-meaning guy.
I wrote about one idea here (he accompanies the Nolofinweans on a barbecue that deteriorates as Nolofinwe and Feanaro turn barbecuing into a weird dick-measuring contest). I don't have any other specific stories currently on deck, though, because my brain has gone in a more deranged direction recently, and well. Alassennë just isn't that kind of fellow. But I'm sure I'll return to him at some point!
Thank you for the ask! :)
