What to look for in a tattoo artist....
A few things to consider when looking for a tattoo artist. -A strong portfolio. A good tattoo artist will have a professional portfolio which will show the artist's tattoo abilities and art abilities. (The photos should be in focus!) Examine the tattoos in the portfolio carefully. Question yourself- Are the lines in the tattoo solid and smooth? Is the coloring filled in solid? Do you like the composition of the tattoo if there are several elements involved in the tattoo? -Do they have a specialty? If you are looking to get a certain style of tattoo, let's say a portrait of your Mother. You better make sure that you see portraits in their portfolio. And don't be fooled by portraits in portfolios that do not show a reference photo. Ask to see the photo they tattooed the portrait from. Does it look the same or more like a horrible mangled mash up? Celebrity portraits are a lot easier to tell. -Is the artist clean? Is the tattoo artist knowledgeable with the Bloodborne Pathogens standards in his/her state/county? This is EXTREMELY important because you want an artist that is going to keep you safe from getting any kind of disease or infection through cross contamination. Also, ask to see the sterile room. This is where they sterilize the tools that are being used during a tattoo. It should consist of an autoclave and an ultrasonic cleaner, as well as a sink. Ask if they get the autoclave spore tested regularly to insure that it is properly sterilizing the equipment? There are some artists that use disposables which are fine, as long as they are ONE TIME use. That means needles and anything else that is used during the tattoo gets thrown away after every tattoo! -Does your artist have a good attitude? It's very common for people to go to a tattoo shop and get greeted by someone that seems to have an attitude. If you can communicate effectively with your artist and feel that they understand the look you are trying to achieve then great. If not, then why give an asshole your money? Tattoos should be an experience, a good one. -Referrals! Does your friend have an awesome tattoo that you love? Well, where did she get it? Did she have a good experience with the artist/shop? Maybe you will want to get tattooed by that artist as well. Final Comments: DO YOUR RESEARCH! Don't be afraid to spend A LOT of money on your tattoos if the artist is worth it. Tattoos are forever and you get what you pay for. You wouldn't look for a discount plastic surgeon would ya? Well, thanks for taking the time to read this.
