Tav wakes to a massive black bear pawing its way into their tent after it wanders into their camp early in Act 1, perhaps in the first couple of nights. Stricken with fear at the sight of the large creature and unable to move or call out to anyone, they wholeheartedly believe that they are going to die. The bear suddenly lets out a loud whine as it's violently ripped backward out of the tent with such force.
They swear that they could almost hear someone growling among the bear's snarling, saying something along the lines of "needing them alive". Tav can't tell if it was their imagination or not, but it sounds like Astarion. Impossible, they thought. Astarion is nowhere near strong enough to handle a bear... right?
Once their fear subsides, Tav cautiously exits their tent only to find blood staining the ground and leading toward the woods. The bear and whoever pulled it from the tent are nowhere in sight. Deep groves in the ground and huge paw prints illuminated by moonlight reassure Tav that this event had really happened. A bear was definitely present. Glancing over at Astarion's tent yields no clues as it looks as dark as their other companion's. Unable to glean anything from the surrounding area and not wanting to see what became of the bear, lest it returned, Tav goes back into their tent and tries to go back to sleep/meditate.
Adrenalin pumps through their veins even an hour or so later, causing sleep to be uneasy. The sound of the tent flap shifting makes Tav seize up and fall still with their back to it. It was too quiet to be the bear again. They briefly feel a pair of eyes on them before hearing the flap move again, followed by quiet footsteps moving away. Tav fights the urge to jump up to see who it is and forces themselves to stay still. There was no indication that the presence was one of their companions and could still pose a threat.
Once morning comes, Tav wakes with very little sleep in their system and leaves their tent to see the extent of the attack. Their companions express bewilderment at the tracks and blood around Tav's tent. It is then that Tav realizes everyone except Astarion is standing around, questioning the situation. Instead, he's walking back to his tent from the river, already in his armor. Over his arm are his camp clothes, damp from washing them in the water. He hangs them on the top of his tent to dry before turning in Tav's direction. The solemn, knowing stare he gives them as he pulls out a book causes them to tense up.
Tav approaches him once Gale decides it's best to put down a barrier around the camp to prevent a repeat of a wild animal wandering in, and the rest of the companions disperse. Astarion pleasantly greets them and acknowledges the mess but doesn't comment past that he's grateful that Tav is unharmed, though they can't tell if he's serious or not. When pushed, his voice takes on a serious tone as he gets irritated with the questioning, indicating he and Tav are not on good enough terms.
"Perhaps some things are best left unsaid. For now. We have other, more pressing matters to deal with, Darling."
