I have been Beau’s assistant for quite some time. He was the boss of me and I sometimes hated it since he’d always have me walking back and forth from his office to any crime scenes he can't join in on. That man was sure a tease too, always teasing me and telling me if I kept up the work maybe I’d take his place but I know him. He’d rather die in the most painful way possible than give up his spot as sheriff in Helena.
The first thing I learned about Sheriff Beau Arlen was that he smiled before he teased me. The second thing I learned was that he never missed an opportunity. Working for the sheriff's office had been a dream for years. Working under Beau Arlen… Well. Nobody had warned me that my boss would look like that. Tall, broad shoulders, worn leather jackets half the time, the kind of voice that could make "morning" sound like a compliment. He carried himself with quiet confidence, but he never made the station feel tense. He joked. He listened. He remembered everyone's coffee order. And, for reasons I still hadn't figured out… He loved picking on me.
“Hey, Darlin, you mind taking a look at a homicide downtown?” He asked, handing me a few pages of information of the victim and possible suspects. I looked at them closely and he watched with a grin. “Alright, I'll get on it. And don’t call me ‘Darlin’” I grumbled as I folded the papers to stuff into my coat pocket. He snickered and sat at the end of his desk. “Yes ma’am.” He gave me a weak salute and I rolled my eyes. He could get very annoying sometimes.
The crime scene was brutal, I checked for any fingerprints and all that “fun” stuff, some of the deputies shouting in the back to the others. The house smelt of blood and I scrunched my nose, The kitchen was the spot where everything happened. Blood spread into the cracks of the tiles and I noticed something, a fingerprint, bingo. I got the fingerprint and walked out of the house, the smell of blood now gone and I was finally relieved of that smell. Beau finally arrived and spotted me within seconds. Just looking at him made me dizzy, “Did you find anything?” His steps heavy against the gravel. “Yep, the fingerprint of the possible suspect.” I showed him the evidence and he gave me a proud look. “Atta girl.” He grinned as he patted my shoulder, leaving his hand there for a few seconds too long before letting me go and telling me to head back to the office.
That afternoon, the station had emptied earlier than usual. I was buried in paperwork when Beau appeared beside my desk. "You’re still here?" Beau asked, knocking on the door frame before entering my office. "So are you." I mumbled, my face still deep in paperwork. "I asked first." He crossed his arms as he stood behind my chair, checking out the paperwork I was doing, noticing it was for the homicide from earlier today. "I'm almost done." I replied and then flipped the pages to a new color. I liked color coding my paperwork, which made things easier. "you’re color-coding reports?" he asked with a weird look. "It helps." I smirked. "It absolutely does not." He argued. "It does." That little disagreement put a small smile on my face. He leaned over my shoulder to look closer. I caught the scent of cedar and fresh coffee. Way too close.
"Huh," he murmured. "What?" I looked up with a hint of confusion, unsure if he noticed something or wanted to make fun of me for something. "You're actually organized." he acknowledged. "You sound surprised." I chuckled, setting my pen down. "I figured everything on this desk was held together by hope." He teased and I nudged his shoulder. "Oh, so we're shoving the sheriff now?" Here comes the whole playful act. "I barely touched you." I scoffed and crossed my arms. "You assaulted a law enforcement officer." that brought a laugh out of me. A real laugh. The kind that escaped before I could stop it. Beau looked at me for a second longer than normal. His smile softened. "There it is." "What?" I looked up at him trying to figure out what was happening. "Been trying to get you to laugh all day." I rolled my eyes at the comment "...Seriously? So you've been annoying me on purpose?" He looked genuinely offended. "I prefer 'strategically charming.'"

A few days passed and everyone had gone home except the two of us. Thunder rolled outside. I was looking over a report of a crime that had happened not too long ago when Beau wandered over, hands in his pockets. "Are you hungry?" he asked and I blinked. "...Is that your way of saying you're hungry?" Beau asked with smirk, sitting on the edge of my desk and grabbing a few pages off my desk to look at. "Maybe." I mumbled and the growl in my stomach gave me away. I wanted to punch my stomach for that but I could go for some food right about now. "You skipped lunch again." He gave me that look a mother would give you if you didn't eat. "I've been busy." I tried to explain. "You always say that." He sighed and I sighed dramatically and pushed myself away from my desk, letting my chair roll me backwards. "C'mon." He tilted his head. "Let's go get dinner." He looked almost surprised.
"you’re asking your boss out?" I felt the words hit me a split second too late. My cheeks immediately warmed. "I meant—" "I know what you meant." He smirked, waving a hand in the air. "You don't have to make it weird." I grumbled as I stood up, grabbing my coat. "I wasn't planning to." A beat. "But now that you've mentioned it..." "Oh my gosh." I rubbed the bridge of my nose. He laughed quietly. "I can't help myself." He teased me. "you absolutely can."
"I absolutely can't."
After dinner, Beau drove me home. He insisted that he’d walk me to my door, and didn't want anyone to kidnap his assistant. It was pouring outside and we were both soaked by the time we reached my front door. “Why don't you come inside, You're soaked and I don't want you getting sick.” I said, unlocking my door. “How sweet of you.” He said sarcastically and I nudged him again. We both dried off and I handed him a beer and I filled a glass up with wine. We took a seat on the couch, the warm fire casting a yellow orangish glow around the living room. I looked over at Beau, he was focused on the fire, watching it dance around. His features being lit up by the fire. He caught my gaze and raised a brow. “Whats on your mind?” He asked, shifting around to get comfortable. “Oh, nothing.” I said, swirling my wine in the glass. “Yeah, right.” He responded, taking a sip of the beer before setting it down.
He looked over at me and gave me a look I couldn't quite describe, it was dark but also soft. “There’s definitely something on your mind, Darlin’” I don’t know if it was because of how hot it was in here but my face was red, He noticed and smirked. He patted the cushion closest to him and I hesitated before moving over and resting right next to him. “You can tell me anything, you know that right.” His hand drew small circles on my shoulder as he spoke. “I know.” I whispered, watching the fire dance. He shifted again and now his hand was under my chin, tilting my head back. He stared into my eyes for a moment, the silence was long but oddly comforting instead of awkward. He shifted closer, our lips inches apart. I closed the gap, our lips meeting and a soft groan left him. Our tongues danced around and I straddled his lap as we made out. This felt wrongly good. I was making out with my boss, I hope that this doesn't change anything between us though. My mind began to drift and he pulled away. “Don’t think too hard about this.” He reassured me, I didn't realize until now how stiff my body was. My body always gave me away when I overthought.
He twisted our bodies and now my back was pressed against the couch cushions and his hands were on either side of my head. He dipped his head into the crook of my neck and began kissing my neck. Soft moans slipped from my lips, my fingers digging into the fabric of his jacket. “I’ve got you.” He whispered and kissed up my jaw to my cheeks. His lips met mine again and I felt his thigh press between my thighs. I whimpered and my hips began to move without my permission. I could feel his smirk against my lips. The friction was pleasing enough to make my body squirm under him. He continued kissing me, swallowing every soft moan that left me. This probably went on for at least 10 long minutes before I couldn’t hold it in much longer. “Go ahead.” He purred against my neck, the vibrations of his voice sending shivers down my spine and I came. I was panting like I just ran a marathon only I was just grinding against his thigh. He gave me one last kiss before pulling away. I sat up and looked over at him with a flushed look. He patted my thigh and stood up, extending his hand out for me to grab. He took me to the bathroom to clean myself and walked me to my bedroom. “Get some sleep, we’ve got a big day at the office tomorrow.” He winked as he walked to the door. He pressed his index finger against his lips. “This stays between us for a little while alright, Darlin.” He whispered with a smirk. I nodded with a soft smile. “Yes sir.” I whispered back and then he was gone.
This friendship was now something else, friends with benefits maybe?
