1930s Dunhill-Namiki Tavannes “La Captive” purse watch

After the wristwatch was popularized in the early part of the last century, Dunhill among others led in a flurry of putting watches everywhere and on everything - pens, lighters, compacts, belt buckles and, in collaboration with watchmaker Tavannes, exquisite small so-called purse watches that would spring open with the press of a button. They came in silver, gold, and very rarely in decorated lacquer and hand-painted real gold (and inlaid mother of pearl - raden) made in Japan by the artisans of Namiki, with whom Dunhill Paris had negotiated an exclusivity in 1929. This is an exquisite example.

This exceedingly rare military example features a period 24 hour porcelain military dial, stained glass hands and a hinged-lug case. Fitted with one of our correctly re-created two-piece straps in black cordovan, with matching sterling buckle.
