ok so i’m seeing a lot of people complaining about travis’s pc in the lastest campaign (ethersea) so i wanted to share my take.
devo’s whole Thing is that he’s young and headstrong. he grew up in a holier-than-thou mindset and was always told (whether implicitly or explicitly) that followers of hominine were better than nonbelievers. his entire character revolves around the religious trauma he experienced and the intense emotional abuse and manipulation he suffered as a child— and his residual anger after leaving the cloister he was raised in. but he hasn’t escaped his abusers! he still sees them (he still works for them!) and in doing so is reminded every day of what he’s been through. he doesn’t ever get to escape that, and is taking agency in the only ways he knows how.
disclaimer: i am NOT saying he is always right and justified in how he addresses conflict. clearly, he’s in the wrong a lot, and travis himself has said this! travis has admitted that he doesn’t agree with devo’s actions! but, for him (and for me) his actions make sense for the kind of person he is. travis doesn’t choose for devo to respond to conflict how a well-adjusted adult with healthy coping mechanisms might because that’s not who devo is! he lashes out on other people and makes the wrong calls and insults his friends— and what we’re seeing is a very rough step in the healing process. devo is right to be angry at his abusers, and he is wrong to take that anger out on everyday people. these two beliefs can and should coexist.
please do not get mad at travis for creating a character that was intended to bring conflict to the story. the adventuring party does not always have to get along, and i think that makes for a more interesting narrative! i really enjoyed listening to the fight between amber and devo, and i’m interested to see how the group dynamic shifts over time. i love seeing how much thought and work these boys put into their character interactions, and i think they’re all doing a great job so far. as long as the mcelroys have been popular, travis has always received the most negativity, and i don’t think it’s justified! he’s doing his job, and he’s doing it well, just as the other three are <3
tl;dr devo is not always in the right, but it is an intentional choice that travis is making that (i think) adds some interesting conflict to the narrative
