I come home from work to my mum and my sister talking about Caitlyn Jenner... but, y’know, they’re repeatedly referring to her as “Bruce”.
In b4 you ask, yes I’ve tried to correct my sister on that, but she’s like, “but I’m referring to him in the PAST tense!!1 Before he became Caitlyn!!!11!” And my mum is basically a no. She’s pretty homophobic/transphobic. She’s better than she was several years ago, but that’s not saying much. Nowadays she’s... more tolerate and kind of understands? But she still thinks it’s weird and to a point, wrong. (My sister basically thinks of herself as a good ally, but is overall really uneducated.)
And then my sister mentions something about LGBTQ and refers to the T as “transvestite”. I respond with no, it stands for transgender. She gets this firm, annoyed tone with me “that’s what I meant.” And then couple minutes after she says the Q stands for questioning which is fair enough, but when I mention that it also stands for queer she gets all uptight and says, “Well I learned it was questioning.” It! Stands! For! Two! Words! I tell her that, and even explain by saying that the A stands for both aromantic and asexual and she’s just like, “the A???? What A???? Where’s the A??????”
And she gets that way every single damn time I try to politely educate her. One time when I was trying to explain a term to her she responds with, “oh well I don’t look this stuff up like you do!” Then don’t turn around and fucking get mad at me when I correct you when you’re WRONG because you refuse to look this shit up yourself.
Idk this shit just bums me out because I’m genderqueer and pan and at this point I don’t think I can literally ever tell them
