TBE Week 2020: Someone Else’s Best Written Male Character ↳ James McKnight (Written by Haley)

first let me preface this by saying that there are WAY TOO MANY amazingly written characters of both genders on this site. it was incredibly difficult to choose my best written male. like i kept looking at the list and changing my mind a thousand times, but in the end, it had to be james.

haley writes james in such an amazing way. he’s a good lawyer dedicated to justice and his family. he’s a good friend. he’s just a good person in general. which made his development in year five very interesting, because in year five, district attorney james mcknight helped dispose of a body.

just that one scene would’ve made him a contender, but how haley played him afterward, his reaction to finding out what his then-fiance did, his guilt at obstructing the law, all of that - it was just amazing. that entire arc earned james his place on the list and its where my mind kept going back as i went to make the decision for best written male for 2020.

✨  #TBEWEEK20 ✨  PROMPT 1: When I was making Jasmine over a year ago, I was terrified of ending up with a Mary Sue on my hands. Sometimes I still am, because every now and then I find people that perceive her to be this sweet, innocent, lovely girl -- which she can be, but if I'm doing my writing right, that's not the whole Jasmine. And one year changed her a lot, too. Jaz has been through so much that I wouldn't even know where to start listing. From a car crash to beginning to understand her sexuality, further family drama, getting involved with alcohol and drugs... It can be a little bit hard to remember who she was in my head back then. I start out with characters who are lost and make them find themselves along the way, but I went the opposite way with her and I'm very pleased with it. Jaz is a 21-year old girl who always thought she knew what she stood for, what she liked and what she didn’t. She always thought she was so much smarter and more mature than anyone else her age, and she's proven wrong with every thread I have and I just... listen, I love ruining my characters. I love making Jaz realize she's jealous and possessive and overly sentimental, sometimes even cruel and very hypocritical. I love seeing her trying to make sense of her anxieties and pain while desperately holding onto her beliefs that "everything happens for a reason" and "happy thoughts fix everything". I love writing her collecting gnomes and naming plants and I love writing her yelling at people all the same. I think she's very relatable and human, and I'd probably hate her guts if she were an actual person, but since she's not, here's to Jasmine Grace Flowers.

THE BIG EASY RP WEEK 2020 [day one]

Cesar Emilio Cortez

taking wanted ads is like a double edge sword for me.  gives you instant plots for your character but there’s the constant wonder if the character lives up to what the requester imagined.  seeing as it wasn’t a catch and release situation here, i feel i did alright with this guy.  cesar has become so much more then i could have imagined for him. i did not expect that he’d become one of my favourite characters which is on me bc he’s the sort of character i love in anything that i watch.  

honestly i don’t even know where to start.  it’s a challenge to write a character like tez (if i call him cesar again he might not cooperate with me for a while), because he is not a good person and he does not want to be a good person, but he is redeemable.  and i feel like that’s a key quality that’s necessary in order for him to be a well rounded character.  i’m not saying that his entire character is redeemable because it’s not, but certain actions of his are which makes him more then a one dimensional bad guy character that i see and did not want for him.

he is probably the most complex character that i write and its because the man chooses to interact with people in a way that is based on who they are and how he perceives them. he can have a softer edge to him but it’s still an edge.   i’ve gotten to write him through so many extreme situations in the last year, he’s gone through so much development and yet, he’s still not at a point where i’m dying for him to be. i think that’s why he’s my best written character bc it would be so easy to take what he’s gone through and experienced in the last year alone and say he’s fixed.  that he’s ready for that next chapter. that he’s ready for a relationship or to own up to who he is or that he’s ready to reveal that secret he’s been holding on to for two decades.  he’s not, its an accomplishment that i was able to change his sexuality.

he is the poster child for ‘the road to hell is paved with good intentions’.  no matter what he tries, it always blows up in his face.  but if there’s one thing i learned this year, its that i loved diving in to his darker side and seeing how comfortable he is in that element.  i can’t wait to explore more of that as well as the complexities that have defined him and dismantling certain ideals.

TBE WEEK PROMPT 2 -- Best Written Character of Someone Else -- Sterling Carlisle

A day late, but for me a best written character that is not my own is Sterling Carlisle written by Maddie (@borges-emma). I had never intended to request Hayden’s son because one he was so young I didn’t think anyone would want to play him and two I didn’t know if anyone would be able to write him like how he is in my head.

Maddie has done that and more! It is literally as if she took the idea that I had of Sterling out of my head and then made him one hundred times better. I am so glad I get to write this father and son dynamic against her and am excited to see where she takes this character as she continues to develop him into something I could have never imagined.

TBERPweek 2019 - Other Character to Throw Down For

ugh i just? love? her?

she’s a younger sister. she’s canadian. she has this way of looking at the world that is so pure and hilarious but still has her hangups that make her real. Playing her older sister were some of my favourite threads and plots and out of all of my characters i think ivory would’ve been the only one i’d ever consider reincarnating, purely for this nugget. Which is saying a lot because  once a character’s dead i hate bringing them back lol. i’ll never be quite over ebony, but i still absolutely love keeping up with her antics in #thebigeasy ;)

THE BIG EASY RP WEEK 2019 [day four] ↳ plot i’m proud of → the royals

I’m actually able to pick one for once because there just isn’t any competition? There has been no plot that I’ve - and other people (shout out to Kae and Haley) have not put more work into than the Royals. When Kae and I first created the team during the Olympics we had been convinced that we were going to be the only hockey players on the board and we were alright with that. And for a good while we were the only ones there - the shift came when Dani made her beautiful boy and it just sort of escalated from there. We bullied Ashley into revamping her boy for it, Emma rejoined us giving us our captain, Emmy brought along the darker side of the sport, and Nova appeared from the heavens with her angel.

Hockey is a way of life for me as a Canadian and I don’t think anyone but another Canadian can ever understand it. You can see it in the way that Kae and I throw our hearts and souls into this plot and I think thats why it’s just taken off in the way that it has. The Royals are just a part of New Orleans culture and they are so developed from their uniforms, logos, schedule, history. It’s enough that I’ve seen it seep into the narratives of characters that have no connection to a hockey player and I could not be more proud of something like that. Writing is a collaborative experience in rp - I’d be writing a book instead otherwise. That’s why i value my group plots the most and I’m thrilled to be writing with such an amazing group of girls that value the comradeship of these boys and the sanctity of hockey.
