Imagine if Bilbo stealing the Arkenstone wasn’t portrayed as The Right Thing to Do(tm), but as an ambiguous decision. Thorin is so obsessed with protecting the Dignity and Sacred Symbols of his people, that he would sacrifice his and his company’s lives for for it......but Bilbo is so obsessed with the safety of his friends that he’d sacrifice the Higher Causes that they’re fighting for.

The real tragedy of the story wouldn’t be that Thorin had turned greedy and evil. It’d be that Thorin and Bilbo had completely different ideas about what kind of story they were in.

 For Thorin, this is an Epic Fantasy Legend about defending his people’s sacred artifacts from their mortal enemy, and who cares if he has to die for it? For Bilbo, it’s a small personal adventure story about trying to help his friends, and who cares about things like ~honor~ and ~dignity~? 

 Bilbo’s greatest strength is that he cares so deeply about The Little Things, but that’s also his greatest weakness.

And heck-- in the book Bilbo even regrets taking the Arkenstone! This is his big climactic character moment, and he comes out of it believing it was actually the wrong decision!

I desperately fucking need to shower.

I desperately fucking needed to shower, in all honesty, a frightening number of days ago and I haven’t because lately trying to muster up the energy to shower has been an uphill battle that I have consistently been losing.

Today I shoveled my car out and broke an ice scraper trying to get it cleaned off. I took out two bags of trash. I dropped my coworker’s keys off at the store, and went to petco to buy a new water fountain for the cats. I washed a sink of dishes. I assembled half of a fucking Ikea dresser.

Showering should be the most painless and enjoyable part of today... and instead I’m sitting on my couch trying to negotiate with myself to figure out what, exactly, it will take to get me off my ass in the bathroom within the next hour. Because the thought of having to go through the process of showering makes my skin crawl and my stomach turn which is not, quite frankly, ideal.
