12/29/06 On Mariska by Stephanie March Stephanie March here. You may (or may not) remember me as the spectacle clad ADA Cabot who never won a case. With a team of 12 writers behind me I still couldn’t do it. Those are some mediocre prosecutorial skills if I ever saw ‘em. Anyway, Mariska and I have always had a connection-right from the very beginning, from the very first day, and I am honored to be given a spot to gab on her site. Mariska and I are two sides of the same coin. Honestly. We are each other’s perfect opposite, perfect compliment, perfect foil. She is funny, I am only sort of funny. She is sexy and dark, I am silly and blonde. She is a force of nature, I am a good sounding board. She is drums and lead guitar, I am bass and the occasional cymbal. (Actually, I have no rhythm to speak of). She is chili, I am honey. Our birthdays are each other’s half birthdays. So on and so forth. We were meant to meet, and we were meant to be friends. It’s a good on-camera match for two such people, but the real fortune is the off-camera friendship we formed and have maintained since my departure from SVU. I am about to start rehearsals for a play on Broadway, called TALK RADIO, with none other than Peter Hermann. Funny thing about Peter and I—everytime we work together something good happens to Mariska. You may remember that “Trevor Langdon” was brought on to SVU as a defense attorney and Cabot’s erstwhile love interest. As it turns out, he had the hots for Benson. Trevor and I wear glasses. Trevor and I like to read. Trevor and I are tall. Trevor and I adore Olivia. Life imitates art. (PS. Never let anyone call television “art” again. The Oral History of Law & Order: SVU's Most Beloved (and Reviled) ADAs September 26, 2019 … Which ADA did Benson have the most chemistry with? … Baer: Cabot. And that goes back to the whole storyline of the witness protection because Benson and Stabler think she’s dead and the look on Benson’s face when she finds out that’s not true is stunning and that speaks more than any words could have done. [Fans] loved Stephanie March. There was a large lesbian contingent who shipped Benson and Cabot getting together. Because Diane Neal left the show I always wanted Stephanie to come back, which is why we had her in witness protection as opposed to just killing off her character in the car explosion, because she was getting married, and she might want to come back. When she came back I remember reading on the fan-fiction site that she put her overnight bag on the bed next to Benson’s and what did that mean? It was so interesting to see how the fans projected their own desires onto these characters. March: Hell girl, it’s me! I have to say that because there’s so much love there. That’s probably a reflection of Mariska, but I’m gonna say me. We definitely had a group of fans that hoped there was a more romantic connection between Benson and Cabot. Mariska and I always joke that we were trying to get a kiss on-screen to see what would happen. Let’s break the Internet! The last time we shot, at the end of the take, we moved in for a kiss and they were like “Cut, cut, cut.” We were just trying to mess with the editors. I don’t think they wrote it with the intention of [chemistry], but I think Mariska and I just really enjoy working with each other. Honestly we built two characters we believed in. In my mind, Alex Cabot is a real person. Mariska did the same thing for Benson. I think when you have two actors who are really committed to their roles and they enjoyed each other personally, then there’s going to be chemistry.

With hot 'Law & Order' squad's focus on sex crime, suddenly everybody's watching the detectives March 23, 2005 Subtext, psychological and sexual, plays a pivotal role in "SVU's" fandom. More than a few viewers wonder, for example, whether the perennially single Benson shared more than just case files with "SVU's" former assistant district attorney, the so-cool-she's-chilly Alexandra Cabot (Stephanie March). By the time Cabot departed the series in a hail of gunfire last season, an online cult had flowered, devoted to the allegedly never-consummated love between the shows' two bombshell crime fighters. "SVU's" writers know a fun thing when they see it, and played to the Alex- Olivia cult by bringing Cabot back for a night in the February episode "Ghost. " At one point, Benson is shown arriving at the former A.D.A.'s apartment clutching an overnight bag; soon, the two women are trading meaningful gazes and bemoaning the difficulty of trying to be "someone you aren't." Oh! The tension. Baer admits tweaking fans with veiled references to Sapphic love. "We read the fan sites. We know that people are into the Alex-Olivia thing. All the codes are in there."
